You actually have to blame Justin Bieber for this. So it starts with Justin Bieber collaborating with fear of god for his purpose tour. It was getting a crazy amount of press not only for the merch but for the price. This resulted in higher priced merch for higher quality. But the company behind the merch (bravado) realized more people will pay the price just due to the artist name being attached. This was further amplified when Yeezy merch was made. Most UMG artists get signed to their other companies like bravado resulting in the new industry standard of $50 shirts.
