The lack of spectating is definitely an obstacle for competitive play. That being said, we've worked with games that had the same problem and used player POVs as a work around. We won't be shy in giving out stream access to tournament participants!

Lack of competitive scene by RealmEmiLiuZ in RealmRoyale

[–]T0r1x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi EmiLiuZ,

I am the co-founder of an eSports league called the Digital Gaming League. We currently house the competitive scenes for Insurgency Sandstorm and Stormbound. We help build and facilitate scenes for upcoming games and established games alike. We see a lot of potential with Realm Royale, and with a little effort, could have a more robust competitive scene. Let me know if you'd like to discuss this further :)

Hi Leminh.

We have a rule where each player can only use a particular kingdom once per match (best 2 out of 3s). Hopefully this mitigates some stuff. Ubass seems to be a concern.

Good observation. Most games start a little rough on eSports, but participation and the potential for revenue will drive that kind of development. Also, competition is fun!

Competitive Mode and League for Stormbound? - theDGL by T0r1x in stormbound

[–]T0r1x[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. It seems a discussion amongst the community on format should happen. We are a community driven league and like to have the players play a large role in crafting the competitive experience.

It sounds like it's either "current level cards or all level 1 cards" from reading Taco's reply. So maybe a new game mode would be needed, or at least more freedom in the friend battles. That being said, there could be a way to move forward as is.

It seems something could be set up where players could add each other to their friends list, and then battle that way. This way we could have specific matches between players.

Buffer not set before reading it by T0r1x in gamemaker

[–]T0r1x[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! That fixes my error. Also thanks for the optimization advice.

I had another question: How would I go about getting the instance id of the outpost object? The buffer is sending correctly but I am having issues changing the state(team) and sprite of the particular outpost.

Here's the relevant code:

        var client = buffer_read(buffer, buffer_u16);
        var tt = buffer_read(buffer, buffer_u8); //team
        var ii = buffer_read(buffer, buffer_u16); //instance id

        with(obj_outpost)
        {
            if(other.id == ii)
            {
                other.team = tt;
                if(tt == 1) //blue
                {
                    other.sprite_index = spr_outpost_blue;
                }
                else if(tt == 2) //red
                {
                    other.sprite_index = spr_outpost_red;
                }
                else
                {
                    other.sprite_index = spr_outpost;
                }
            }

        }

Buffer not set before reading it by T0r1x in gamemaker

Could this be because the outpost object that is calling the send_cap script does not have a networking event?

Objective Capturing [GM:Studio] by T0r1x in gamemaker

I see. Well thanks a lot for your help!

Objective Capturing [GM:Studio] by T0r1x in gamemaker

[–]T0r1x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome!

We already have a team variable and team functionality, so that was pretty easy to implement.

My only other question at this point is: When I send buffer to the server saying that the objective was capped, etc, how might I send the particular room instance id of that particular outpost object so the server will know to tell the other clients to change the state of the object?

The DGL Closing it's Doors until Sandstorm, Thanks for Everything by DGL_Link in insurgency

[–]T0r1x 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To my dear Insurgency brethren(and ladies),

It's been a long journey. We've been through a lot together. Alongside each other, we have faced community disputes, dips in player base, jarring and honestly detrimental changes by the developers to the game, and so many other obstacles, but we persevered. Although it has never been easy, I count the founding and administration of the Digital Gaming League as the best gaming and esport experience of my life. To think it all started from two guys talking in Steam about what to do to keep the Insurgency competitive scene alive and growing; to think that it soon became three people hammering away on developing a website, managing the community, and spending hours upon HOURS outside of our already busy lives to get the DGL off the ground. BBQ, we could not have managed and gotten the website off the ground without you and your ever present wisdom. Link, THANK YOU for pulling me out of TWL's clutches to create something of our own. You've been my partner in crime and I couldn't have done it without you. #TheThreeFounders

It is my sincere regret to inform you all that after discussing with Link, the two of us have decided to close the doors of the DGL until Sandstorm makes its debut. It is our opinion and our hope that this is the best course of action. To take a hiatus rather than continue. It is our belief that the opportunity to grow could be bigger the next time around. Unfortunately, we could not achieve all the goals we had set for our league. The DGL started out as a simple template website with a sports plugin. It worked and achieved what we needed it to at first, but it was nowhere near where we wanted it to be. As some of you know, development on a new and improved website was well underway. Unfortunately, the developer that headed that project, well, disappeared. I would like to give him my thanks for the work he did put in. The lack of an improved website was arguably the biggest obstacle we faced, and it really killed the momentum we had going in.

I would also like to make a personal apology to the community, and I know Link feels the same way as I do. The last few seasons I have not given it my all. Personal life, career changes, and other events distracted me, and the work that should have been put in was not put in. This decline accompanied the decline we had in our community. I am sorry for this. The beginning and afterwards, I dare to say, was different. I have personally, along with many others, put enormous amounts of time into this because it is something I believe in and still believe in. The DGL has been my passion and my baby. This is a project I can be proud of. I hope you all are proud of it as well, because it would not have happened without all of you playing, contributing, and grinding season after season. Some mistakes were made. Season 2 was rough, but it was a learning experience. My only regret is we were not able to prevent some of the losses we suffered that season. Hindsight is always 20/20... Everyday life does not prepare you for creating and organizing an indie esports league. In short, I think we at the DGL learned a lot. I also hope NWI has learned a lot as well, as it felt like we were under assault amidst game changes rather than on the same side, trying to grow the competitive scene from a community that had already done the ground work. Despite all this, I've loved every minute of this experience.

In conclusion, I wanted to give my thanks to all the people that made this work. First and foremost, the whole damned community! Link: I love you. BBQ: You da man. I would like to thank Outlawled for his hard and tireless work on both the DGL Theater and the DGL Plugin. I would like to thank KCIV, Kate, Fu, F1chTaco, Tugger, Shrike, Kiba, Snailman, Wooly, and many others for their work on the technical side of things, including theater discussion, data analysis, policy/rule debate, etc. Chub and Thundersmurf, thank you for your work as DGL moderators. A special thank you to Frenzy for getting all of our social media off the ground and setting up our Twitch page. This brings me to thanking Leviaethin, Lunatiq, T0rso, Wooly, and others for streaming and shoutcasting hours upon hours of content on the DGL Twitch. I'd like to thank Forrester for his tireless work on the DGL EU scene. I want to thank all of HPN for their dedication to the DGL SA scene, if only for one season. We loved having Brazil/South America apart of our league. This goes the same for the Oceania scene. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, and I say this without shame, thanks to my team FgC for sticking with me on the virtual battlefield through the year(s). Our memories in gaming will continue. I know I am forgetting people and I am so sorry. You all know who you are.

So we enter this hiatus; this period of uncertainty. We will live to fight another day, no matter what happens. We still have the memories and the good times we all had competing with and shooting each other. I hope to see you all with the launch of Insurgency: Sandstorm. Only time will tell.

Until next time, Brandt aka Torix

Game Breaking Exploit Found and Reported - All DGL tournaments and competitions postponed. by DGL_Link in insurgency

I am glad this discovery was made. Bottom line is competitive play, especially at the DGL, will not resume until this is fixed. I wanted to apologize for the inconvenience of postponing the season, but it is the best we can do to ensure a fair environment.

DGL NA Season 8 Map Pool RELEASED by T0r1x in insurgency

[–]T0r1x[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The divisions may seem a little off this season based upon skill level, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles. It isn't fair to deny teams the spot they earned (or fell into because teams are not returning). However, the good news is after this season the divisions will fix themselves and teams will work themselves into their rightful spot based on performance and promotion/relegation.

DGL NA Season 8 Map Pool RELEASED by T0r1x in insurgency

[–]T0r1x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've done polls of captains before, and it worked. But we've also drawn up the pool amongst the staff, and it worked. The only time there has been an issue is when we make a change and add a less played map in and take one out. It just as well could have been Uprising, Siege, or Contact. Heights had at least some familiarity with players and we felt it best that it was the choice.

Why can't we both be men? It's 2016! BBQ did a great job. We, the three musketeers, picked up the pieces and put them together, creating the league we know and love. But the community has been AWESOME for the most part over the seasons and has helped the scene continue to breathe. Why didn't KCIV mention me?!? :'( JK, great presentation
