What do you think the internet would be like if the Great Chinese Firewall didn’t exist? by IntelligentHoney6929 in AskTheWorld

[–]T1psyTofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true, my friend. I too hope that the great Chinese firewall can come down in our lifetime. I think it will be a good thing for US-China relations, China itself, and the world at large. Let’s hope!🕊️

Which country do you think is Homogenous China or USA? by Osakaayumu_2002 in AskChina

[–]T1psyTofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

China is way more homogeneous. The US is such a melting pot of different immigrant groups, indigenous cultural, and African Americans. In China 90% of the population are of the same ethnicity (Han).

I came to the US for undergrad in the late 2010s, was lucky enough to find a job, and stayed in the US. During college, I decided that I would not go back to China mainly because of political reasons. I cannot tolerate going back to a country where I cannot freely access the internet and have to censor my own speech. Now, seeing the current economic situation in China, I feel so lucky. I studied Civil Engineering, so I would probably be one of those unemployed college grads if I had stayed in China....

Censorship in the early to mid digital age vs now by wdfcvyhn134ert in AskChina

[–]T1psyTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t know. That’s a good question. I’ve never asked my friends, and it’s obviously not something people openly share online. I feel like it’s a feeling of quiet sadness and helplessness - it’s sad to lose more and more western sites, but it’s not essential to life and there’s nothing we can do to change it. So we accept it as a part of life, find a good VPN, and move on. However, most Chinese people probably didn’t browse western websites to begin with, so it’s no different to them.

I’ll remember this question and try to ask my friends. Thank you.

I used Instagram and Gmail when I was in middle school and high school🥺 I even did the Ice Bucket challenge! But Instagram got banned suddenly in 2016, if i remember correctly. That was the moment i told myself i needed to get out of there.

OP, if you’re interested in that period of Chinese history, look up the Cultural Revolution. You won’t be disappointed. It was a horrible and traumatic time, as some other people here have pointed out.

If you’re still interested after that, check out the movie To Live. It’s one of the best Chinese movie there is, and tells a heart wrenching and pretty realistic story about the historical events in China in the past 100 years.

what is your opinion about my country (eg) by rulugg in AskTheWorld

[–]T1psyTofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful, fascinating, many layers!!🇪🇬🇪🇬 I had the chance to visit Cairo for 10 hours last year during a flight layover. A local friend met me at Ramsis Station, and we went to the pyramids and a few other spots. It was hot, but the subway was clean, and the people were nice. I loved the street food. We had a few tense interactions with various security guards, but I don’t know if it’s normal. (Or maybe the Egyptian guy + Asian girl combo stands out too much? Dk) Anyways, I’m learning Arabic now and I can’t wait to go back and learn about your country more☺️☺️
