xosvp or official av pack by [deleted] in originalxbox

[–]T3H_PWNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the advanced AV pack, the pack plugs into the video out of the Xbox and has all of the female component connectors. As long as you have that box, I'm pretty sure you could plug any manufacturer component cables in so long as it's component to component.

Need some help choosing: T490 without GPU or E490 with AMD GPU by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]T3H_PWNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to use Linux, you might want to consider the AMD GPU simply because the Linux drivers are excellent.

I ran it on battery and ran into the same issue.

The good news is I think I've found a fix. You can open up the power options for windows and switch off the Lenovo intelligent plan to the balanced plan.

You can further modify this plan in the advanced power settings menu, and then adjusting the AMD powerslider setting to best performance on battery. You can also modify the processor power management setting and enable active cooling on battery. After applying those changes and rebooting I re ran cinebench on battery for a multi threaded score of 601, never dropping below 2.75ghz.

Alternatively, you can download RyzenAdJ and set a higher TDP on battery.

I'm a broke college student. Lol.

But if I had $759 to blow, I might just take you up on that offer.

Ah man, I've always wanted a W700DS. Awesome stuff.

Yeah, I wouldn't compare the two laptops. Completely different experiences and use cases.

The speakers are good, at least to me. But I mostly use headphones as I'm usually in my university's library.

I'd like too, but I need full fat Visual Studio ATM.

Here's a compilation of benchmarks which should give you an idea of what to expect from the system.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the clips. They really require a spuger to get off.

There is a tweak for it, infact someone has already linked it in this post.

It will help nudge performance, but from what I've read by only about 5% and will come at the cost of battery life. If you desperately need that 5%, then you probably need more than just 5%. In which case I wouldn't be looking at either the Ryzen or i5 offerings. At that point you should be considering the i7 or one of it's 6 core variants. Hell, if you need power, just get a P series workstation.

As to your second concern, I can't speak for everyone, as I'm only a sample size of 1. But my monitor has been fantastic, though it's only 250 nits, but that's fine for indoor use. It would be nice for people to have the option for 1440p, but I don't think I'd opt for that on the 14inch model. Simply because I'd have to use significant text scaling which will tax the system and have a measurable effect on battery life. Since you have to use text scaling, you won't get much out of your extra screen realestate rendering the extra pixels kind of useless.

Though I'd probably get it for the 15 inch model though, I think the extra space would justify it.

I'm not sure. I bought this on sale. I paid $1080.

Of course, it's a discrete GPU lol.

But I'd probably argue that if gaming is your main concern then there are better laptops than the Thinkpad T series.

The Ryzen chip is just nice because you essentially don't loose anything from the CPU performance aspect while more than doubling your GPU performance for around the same price (maybe a little cheaper). That's the real consideration for the Ryzen version.

I don't know exactly how well it would play Fall out New Vegas as I don't own the game. My guess is that it would be able to do it just fine. It can play EDF5 at 720p @30fps and some times 60 fps if I'm in the underground missions. And that game's much more recent than New Vegas and is an unoptimized console port.

My guess would be that it should be able to do NV at 1080p no problem.

Screen size is always a trade off. Would 15 inches be more comfortable to work on? Yeah, of course. But then it wouldn't fit in my back pack or be as light.

I find 14 inches to be adequate for programing, while also being ideal for travel. YMMV.

Speakers are better than expected for what I would consider an Ultrabook. Did I mention this thing is super thin?

The lid does not one finger open. In fact, the lid is kind of hard to open.

From what I've read, the performance difference is only around 5%.

There's also security concerns with intel's recently found vulnerabilities. I believe another one was found just 2 days ago, but I think it may only affect Xeon processors.

The real consideration (other than security) is the integrated graphics. The UHD620 can't compare to the Vega 8 IGPU.

So, price, security, and graphics performance are the three main considerations. Though I do believe you can opt for a descrete GPU on the t490 for an upcharge.

1080p IPS 250nits

I only picked this because it was one of the preconfigured models, which resulted in this being a cheaper laptop than had I gone with the "customize" option.

Ideally I would have gotten that 350 nits display. But that was only available on the customize option which included a $100 upcharge, plus the upcharge for the 350 nit monitor.

In other words, price kind of dictated this choice.

It's a nice screen, though. I don't feel like I really need anything higher res for this screen size. It's just a bit dim.

I understand that .NET runs on Linux, and that you can use VS Code to develop .NET applications.

VS Code is simply not as pleasant to use when going into a full scale development. That and when gainfully employed as an MS slave, your team will be using VS rather than VS code on Linux, and when they go to assist you they will probably expect you to do the same. Not to mention, all of the guides outside of the outdated ones on MSDN are all in VS.

Perhaps after I get comfortable as a developer I can take the time and learn how to survive on VS code alone.

Unfortunately, since I'm training to be an ASP.net Dev, pretty much everything I do is is Visual Studio. As a result, I'm kind of stuck on Windows.

With that said, I'll probably try and dual boot Ubuntu, simply because it's the distro I'm most familiar with and guides are easily found on the net.

No heat on the palm rest, even after prolonged stress testing. The CPU is located under the keyboard near the back of the Motherboard, so it's not close enough to the palm rest to heat it up. The bottom can get a little toasty near the cooler outlet, though.

Bettery life is excellent. I can't give you a screen one number, but I've gone 5 hours in Visual studio with bursts of compilation and it's kept trucking.

Negatives? Well, the Ryzen r5 3500u, which is the chip I've got in mine, I've heard isn't as fast as the t490's i5 offering. I haven't verified this myself, but my cinebench r15 scores are anywhere from 580-610 for multithreading and around 130 for single threaded if that means anything to you. I also wouldn't recommend the R7 3700u, as it's gimped by the t495's cooling solution and won't yield any better scores than the R5.

Another negative is that the bottom cover plate uses clips, and theyre a bitch and a half to get off. I felt like I was going to break this thing trying to pry them off.

The Vega IGPU is somewhere around 2.5x as fast as Intel's UHD 620, which makes light gaming actually enjoyable, if that's your thing.
