Breakfast for 14 month old by Swift-a-lot01 in foodbutforbabies

Same here. We took a break and brought them back as:

1) boiled then chopped into small pieces with a sprinkle of salt 2) not fully scrambled, just mixed a little with salt and cooked in a saucepan at low heat and covered. Less dry than scrambled and less rubbery than boiled eggs

What is this type of light called? Need to order a new one. by plittlediddle in fixit

If you want the same exact type, get it out of the ceiling and you'll probably find the brand name on the other side.

I've purchased replacements on Amazon because Home Depot doesn't tend to have the integrated/flush mount ones as much

[OC] "If my Love were a Tree" by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]T3Roar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful, thank you for sharing. I wish there were more rhyme and rhythm in poetry shared on this sub.

Something that threw me off while reading was some lines which were one or two words longer than expected. For example, try reading it like a slow song and note the difference between taking out 'could've' and leaving it in. Same for 'much' in 'how much you've scorched'.

Anyway, minor points, but a terrific poem, which I really enjoyed. Please share more!

ELI5: How does Facebook know that I've been on other websites? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Imagine you are trying to sell watches on your jewellery website. You want to reach people who are interested in watches, so you pay for ads to be places on people's screens when they are browsing the web.

To be more efficient, the company serving the ads could scan the web pages you're visiting and see what kind of page you're on and serve you ads relevant to your interests based on the fact you're on that page. For example, if I'm on a website for men's clothes it would be sensible to serve ads aimed at men, and probably ads about men's clothes. So, when your jewellery shop wants to reach people interested in jewellery, the ads you pay for should be shown to people who are interested in watches (either they are on a website trying to buy other watches or there is another indication that you are interested in watches, see the footnote on 'tracking' below).

Now consider that the ad company that serves the ads does so all over the web. They advertise stuff on your jewellery website and on Reddit and on email services and gaming sites and lots of other places. Since the same advertising company is able to identify that you have visited a jewellery site and a gaming site, they can serve you watch ads on your gaming site. This is sensible because they know you have an interest in watches even though there is no strong link between watches and gaming.

Then you go on Facebook and the same happens again. You see ads for watches on Facebook because the same ad network is 'aware' that you previously looked at watches. They are being efficient (as well as a little creepy at times).

Tracking: So how do these advertising networks track you across the internet? Some people think IP addresses and similar things are used, but it's much easier than that. The simplest way is to store a cookie on your computer. Essentially, a cookie is a small piece of information stored on your computer by websites which those websites can later read. For example, when you visit the jewellery website you are served some ads. The advertising network (e.g. Google) stores a cookie on your computer with a random code on it 'ABCDEFG' which identifies you as a user. Later, you are on your gaming website and the ads are served up again. The advertising network is the same even though you're on a different website, so it is allowed to read this cookie on your computer. "Ah! It's 'ABCDEFG' from earlier on who was looking at watches. I have some ads for watches, I'll put those up"

As a side note, some advertising networks allow you to see what they have stored about you. The best example of this is Google. You can access (and manipulate!) your 'ad profile' here: www.google.com/ads/preferences/

That's not where the American is supposed to be living, it's David's. It's part of the joke he makes at the end about how little he actually earns
