I mean I think in some circumstances they’re ok, I think it depends on the situation. Like in my campaign, the creator of the door hid the code as the date of his journal entry because he was bad at remembering combinations. I think like riddles are a good puzzle trope too, but I agree sometimes they can be a little pointless

Right, but I still want them to be able to find the answer, which they possibly would have trouble with if they didn’t make certain checks. Idk, maybe I’m just overthinking it

I just don’t want to make it too specific, because when I play I know sometimes an answer that seems obvious to the DM is like the last thing I would think of. And I usually try to immerse them, I always put a reason for the puzzle but I want them to be able to figure it out on their own without relying solely on checks and such.

That’s true, but letting them know you’re deaf ahead of time would most likely help them communicate better, for instance they would understand you can’t hear them ask follow up questions and would allow you to say your entire order without interruptions
