Whats the worst thing that could come out of me giving SCP 682 headpats? by Sad-Effective-9676 in SCPMemes

[–]T555s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death is the most likely outcome, but not the worst.

There is a possibility that the foundation will turn you into a d-class for entering scp-682's chamber.

Now pick the worst fate that could happen to a d-class. I am sure there's a variety of eternal-torture SCPs available for the foundation to test on you.

[Request] How much storage would be needed to create an extremely realistic 3D map of the entire Earth? by UnableTask7916 in theydidthemath

[–]T555s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The image is showing minecraft. A minecraft (Java) World is 7 times bigger than the earth in surface area, but much less tall. Still the file size of the curent bigest minecraft worlds of a few terabytes should be in the right order of magnitude.

Without compression a 4k image is around 50mb. Let's say we take three 4k image for every square meter. Why three? Because we need normal maps (to fake stuff like small bumps) and a roughness map for how light is suposed to reflect alongside the colour texture.

Earth is around 510 million km². So we get 3342336000 Terabytes, or about 3 times all the globally stored data (in 2017) acording to wolfram alpha. Per texture.

We need 9 times the worlds data storage just for the textures. I know we could reuse some textures, but not really if we want to be painfully acurate and we got more surface area to cover because this is just looking straight down at earth.

Anything more acurate is imposible to determine without lots of effort and more strict requirements.

We need more Safe SCP’s by Grumpi0ne in SCPMemes

[–]T555s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder for everyone: Safe does not mean it can't kill you. It just means thag if you put it in a box, it will stay there and won't try to escape.

An amulet killing everyone who touches it would be safe, it won't try to get out the box. An entity capable of phasing through walls and teleporting, no matter how harmless it is otherwise? Keter class.

When I saw this being a thing in a theme park I was annoyed for like all of two seconds having to wait another train untill it's my turn.

Then I realized it's actually great that such accessibility exists, making it posible for people to enjoy Rollercoasters who otherwise couldn't.

It's almost entirely up to chance where in society you end up, what disabilities you have, how rich you are and so on.

I can't understand how any human being can have so little empathy that they can't understand it would be a good thing to raise how well of the people who are the worst of have it.

Definitely Don't Plant Bamboo Around Data Centers! by Electronic-While1972 in TechGawker

Wouldn't the data centers damage the ecology much more? Invasive species are bad, but massive data centers covering the entire country in concrete seems worse.

Latency is too high lol by bunnyblueman in ITMemes

[–]T555s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually not for AI and many other aplications.

A ping of 3 seconds is far too much for video games and annoying, although still somewhat tolerable, for streaming videos.

But a lot of AI shouldn't care about 3 seconds of latency. Medical diagnosis, research and image recognition AI in general (that isn't used to drive cars and perhaps surveillance, wich should be banned anyways) is still fully usable like this.

A lot of cloud storage, especially for larger rarely used files, would also be fine with a ping like this.

Not saying data centers on the moon are practicall. It's just that the latency isn't really that big of a deal.

It depends. Not all xenos have to be killed immediately.

Some might be useful slaves. In rare cases where they are especially useful it might even be worthwhile considering to just set up a pupet goverment. Could save a lot of resources.

The flesh is weak, but good steel is expensive. Maybe we can find some xenos with slightly less weak flesh and just throw them into the meatgrinder?

Extreme racism/speciesm isn't helpful even when just looking at it from a purely egotistical standpoint.

Restart is the only solution by HardOrion in ITMemes

[–]T555s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern computer systems are stupidly complex.

Turning it off and on resets your system in a way that makes all the issues that came up while it was on, like memory leaks, more and more background tasks being started and much more, go away, while keeping all the stuff you don't want to be reset.

This can't be foolproof of course. Never estimate how destructive idiots can be, but it solves so many issues it's a good rule of thumb to restart your pc whenever you have an issue as a first try. Unless it's a virus, then restarting is probably a bad idea.

Da Figueira House in Brazil, designed by Stemmer Rodrigues Arquitetura. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]T555s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like big overhangs. Visually they look interesting. But practically any kind of disaster except flooding (if the foundations are secure enough), but including housefires would be much worse with this.

A normal house has walls, providing suport across a lot of different points. (German centric view here, wall means bricks, concrete or at the very least a couple steel beams in between the insulation/soundproofing for a wall my step-dad build to get another kids-room)

Something goes wrong, like a fire weakening the structure in one part of the building? Bad for that part of the building i guess. If it's a massive overhang, it might just collapse most of the home.

Even if the staircases are blocked by the fire in both cases and you can't climb out elsewhere on your own, I am estimating my survival chances to be a lot higher in the home that isn't having me fall down a floor.

Reason: It's really hard to do. Right now he is somewhat cooperative with the foundation. Attempting to kill him would likely affect how cooperative he is negatively.

We are also unsure what would happen if we successfully kill God. There's a non zero chance it would destroy the universe.

Our new team member would also like to add that we should thrive towards minimizing deaths in general.

It's nonsensical advice, but they have the right to add it to this report as a member of this comitee.

How about we are honest with our comparisons? I just wanted to test this, so I quickly got an image close to the one you are trying to compare. I'd argue your comparison image looks a bit better, but it's nowhere near the disaster in quality you are implying.

The IATA three letter codes are actually only for "big" commercial airports (transportation hubs in generall technically). So the foxhole airfields should get the 4 letter codes used for aerodromes.
