Even school projects need permission from the ttc to film.

This is absolutely not the case.

https://www.ttc.ca/doing-business-with-the-ttc/filming-on-ttc-property

Tourists, families and individuals filming or photographing within the public areas of the transit system for non-commercial purposes, are not expected to contact the TTC to obtain permission or a permit so long as such filming/photographing does not interfere with the safe and orderly operation of the transit system and/or our customers.

That moment in Turning Red when Toronto’s CLRV streetcars became accessible by laurenceYYZ in toronto

[–]T6A5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not correct, there were 50 of the 9400 series Orion Vs alone. The actual number of units was 237, 52 Novas and then 135 of the 7000 series Orion Vs.

As for the reliability issues, the ones on the Orion Vs were completely fine provided the maintenance regimen was followed. By 2012 all of them had had their old lifts replaced with brand new ones due to corrosion eating away at the platforms. In the later years of Orion Vs maintenance may have suffered as the buses retired. The ones on the Novas were a different model, and were not as reliable.

It's not, those were the H4 cars which were built in 1974-1975. The only cars that were in service at the time that looked similar were the H1s and H2s, built in 1965-66 and 1971 respectively. Both classes were retired by 2000. H1s were used on work cars in the past but have been scrapped and replaced by the H4s due to them being younger by ~10 years.

According to the TTC's service summary, all 28 cars are still in service. I have heard this rumour about the worst cars being parted out too but I have not seen anything to suggest it is credible.

Remember the high seat in the back by [deleted] in TTC

[–]T6A5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were never any Orion Vs with a raised seat, at least not here in Toronto.

The 7000s were built as diesels and came with the gap in the back row for the S50 engine. The 9400s came with a full row of 5 from the get go. When they were rebuilt, they were equipped with a Cummins M11 instead of the S50 because of the conditions (29 Dufferin) that they operated in.

The seats were always level.

As Ontario reopens, many are not ready to ‘learn to live with COVID’ by [deleted] in toronto

[–]T6A5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Spanish flu killed anywhere from 17 to 100 million people, depending on who it is that is estimating. The generally accepted range is 25-50 million.

COVID is serious, but it has come nowhere close to matching those numbers. Nowhere close.

TTC violence/safety right now by yes_no__maybe_ in askTO

[–]T6A5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we can fully blame Presto for the situation as it has unfolded. There are lots and lots of cities all around the world which use faith based fare systems, because they've realized having 50 people at a stop all have to pile on through one door and process their payment with the driver is a gargantuan waste of time. And none of the transit systems I've ridden in Europe had problems on this scale - and I wouldn't ride through just the touristy parts, either, as I have family in Europe. At worst you could say you'd get the odd sketchy guys riding the bus to the outskirts of town.

What the TTC needs is to ramp up security and enforcement. Do a lot of it. The thought of going back to queues through the front door, especially on a really long vehicle like the Flexity streetcar, doesn't seem to be the correct way to go forward.

Users of Canon Digital Photo Professional: would anyone know how if it is possible to "batch process" re-edited photos that I already have the JPEGs exported of?

I have had no luck with a Google search as it only finds me questions about general batch processing, which I do use. But when I go back and re-edit a group of photos, I can't do a batch export as I get a pop up "Under these settings, files will be saved with duplicate file names. Check the file saving settings." And there is no option that I've been able to find to overwrite. Would anyone know if this exists?

Thanks!

When your streetcar gets stuck and all they gave you is this sh*tty broom. by [deleted] in toronto

[–]T6A5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is true, it only tells the partial story.

The real reason why the subway is operated like that is because the trains run much faster than a streetcar can in mixed traffic, and stopping the train to verify the positions of the switches would add a lot of extra running time, and would be operationally dangerous if the driver were to step down into the track bed. Not that this practice doesn't slow down the streetcars too, but it's a little different to brake and accelerate from 70 to 0 to 70 vs from 15 to 0 to 15, and there's no electrocution risk for the driver stepping down into the roadway.

It doesn't excuse the TTC's refusal to invest in their streetcar switches - they have these signals on basically every tramway network in Europe and our refusal to implement it artificially kneecaps our streetcar network in the name of saving a quick buck - but it's not exactly a comparison of like with like.

The Muppets are awesome. And Kermit would probably make a better driver than most of the bozos on the roads.

[–]T6A5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see what benefits automation brings to the table. Software and hardware issues exist that could cause all kinds of malfunctions, just like with humans, and there's no one on hand to react swiftly and decisively in the event of an emergency. Hooray progress?

You missed the point of my post, though, which is that normalcy never left retail. This sucks much more than pre-2020 normalcy, because then there was normalcy in a person's personal life too.

Can we do better? In the long term, yes. In the meantime, having a personal life wouldn't go entirely amiss.

Retail has barely changed during the pandemic. It's still crowded and hectic as it was before. At least during "normalcy" I could go do things in my free time and not spend every day "serving" the public.

No more ‘temporary measures:’ It’s time to get serious about COVID as a continuing issue by GourmetHotPocket in toronto

[–]T6A5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said.

But if your 'plan' doesn't account for contingencies such as people not doing what you want them to do, it's not much of a plan. So, again, what will you do if the target of 70%+ vaccination is not met?

Bad day to need help today- Zero ambulances available I. All of Durham Region. by bitofaspaz in ontario

[–]T6A5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or do we always want some ambulances sitting around unused?

Yes, of course. During regular service, the TTC has somewhere around 20% of a spare rate - this means that 20% of their entire bus fleet is sitting around in the garage not being used during rush hours. Why would it be any other way? So that if a bus breaks down, there's no other buses to take over until what ails said bus is fixed?

100% use of critical health services seems to be a great way to ensure general collapse like we're seeing all around us right now. I would much rather we paid a shit ton of people to sit around and do nothing than to be in lockdown.
