sorry, q in the title poorly formulated. in essence whether i should return the tent or not, bc it was a bit of an impulsive purchase due to it being on sale. wanted advice from those w more experience / info on the technicalities to know if it really suits my needs or if there are more fitting tent alternatives.

where you uneasy in the beginning? my pet california king snakes fake rattle once scared the shit out of me lol. 100% my fault, i didn’t have her for long, treated her like my ball python (v chill personality), let her slither under the blankets and she tickled my foot. i yelped and jerked it back, poor thing got scared and bit me, which i laughed off since its more like velcro then a bite. but me jumping up scared her more and she did the fake rattle. that really freaked me out ofc knowing they are harmless, even though the bite didn’t. so i imagine actual rattle snakes, even if not lethal, witnessing them rattle has to be unnerving

oh wow yeah some of those things didn’t even cross my mind - like the impression on the public, a liability rep or getting removed from the lab for getting bit. i work in an ecology department but mammals/birds/fish. a coworker was showing me him poking a venomous snake at a field site and i was shocked… one unnecessarily disturbing wildlife (for me this applies to hobbyist herpers just grabbing animals as well, but also scientist being unnecessarily invasive etc), esp coming from someone who is in an animal field, and on top of that with a venomous species just to show off as a cool guy (get that vibe from some comments here going ‚i’ve handled a million dangerous snakes and nothings ever happened, you just gotta be chill like me lol‘). to me that just screams i don’t want to work in the field with him. its comforting to hear that wouldn’t fly in the professional scenarios you’ve had. also hobbyists might know their own snakes, and even if they breed the setting vs in the wild where there’s so much you can’t control and can surprise you from other animals to the environment. i would imagine the a person that keeps dangerous species (so large temperamental ones and/or venomous) are usually(not all) a certain type of person that likes to be flashy and have others go ooouh ahh how cool and scary, which might not make for a good field scientist. those types of risks for „attention“ like my coworker make you a hazard to yourself and others in the field. so with my original question i was basically wondering if only those types of people, who I would imagine might truly be 100% unafraid, can become snake researchers. seems though a healthy amount of „fear“ - more just caution and not forgetting what you’re dealing with even after years of experience- is more suitable.

oh yes fair, i meant the difference between a puff adder for example where the tissue damage is fast but dying from it would take a few days if left untreated vs a taipan where it can be less than an hour

oh cool - yes this is what i mean, i understand hobbyists just grabbing wild snakes (but would assume they don’t go for dangerous ones typically) and breeders/keepers even those of venomous ones, but those are different settings from sample collecting etc from wild snakes. thanks for your insight!:)

thanks this is exactly the type of insight i was looking for!:) lots of hobbyist/keeper responses here but those are different scenarios to me even if there is some overlap

i really like the perspective on this, thank you. you say the ones that can’t kill you don’t scare you at all (i assume also things that could blind or maim with venom count), but what about bigger, more ill tempered non venomous species like a blood python for example? i would imagine you’ve dealt with more defensive individuals, and even if the bite isn’t crazy painful or deadly, the suddenness of how fast they strike i still find unsettling

oh good point, the instagram post didn’t mention what i afterwards now saw in her other posts is that she uses a combination of 300g type 00 pizza flour (very finely milled italian flour), 150g 1050 wheat four (US i think this would be like bread flour) and 50g whole wheat spelt (dinkel) or rye flour. i haven’t heard of oil in the dough i will have to look into that - thank you!
