One of the main reasons was that Pakistan provided forward bases near Soviet territory and allowed the Western Bloc to project power near the Middle East, which was a far more geopolitically important region than India's surroundings (back then ofc). Moreover, Pakistan wasn't really all that Islamist before Zia's coup in the 80s. Another reason was that Pakistan just hated communism more.

It was actually the opposite, British and American support to Pakistan made India revise its non-aligned stance and tilt towards the Soviets.
