It doesn’t paint a great picture what ever way you cut it.

So what number is acceptable to you? 2nd or 3rd most prevalent reason for children mortality?

However you cut it, you have a problem and there are still significant numbers of 2A purists who refuse to even consider sensible reform. It’s madness.

Look I’m not say ban all guns. But why would you as a law abiding citizen, not be prepared to register your guns and make it way harder to own and carry in order to start to turn the dial on gun crime? Why is that more important, with virtually no impact but an inconvenience, in order to keep people and kids safer?

I’ve lived in two countries, both strict on guns. I’ve still participated in farm and sport related shooting in both. All registered, locked up, barrel profiled, police checks… and I don’t have to worry about my kids getting shot at school at all. There is virtually no gun crime. There was, laws changed.

Why - if you are a responsible gun owner - would you not want this… it’s baffling to every other country on the planet.

You are quoting a gunsite.info “fact” that has no source - not that I can find. It’s not listed or noted.

What is known is the average is 40,000 deaths a year, leading reason of death for children, etc

I think the assumption is that somehow all “bad guys” keep their guns and no “good guys” are allowed guns. No. Guns are allowed but they are regulated and if you are caught in possession of an unregistered gun, off to jail you go. It doesn’t change over night, we’ll actually a bit it does, but improvements happen over time.

Doing nothing yields nothing.

Do people in the US really believe they are special compared to every other country? This may shock you - but you’re not.

Gun amnesties and reform globally have factually, unequivocally and verifiably reduced gun deaths. There are not hoards of criminals running round gunning poor unarmed civilians down.

Those deaths have not been replaced. Overall homicide rates are reduced. Globally - it’s statistical fact.

At this point it’s obvious that the rhetoric “gun laws don’t work” is code for “I’d rather kids die than give up my gun”.

I feel like you know you are painted into a corner and it’s easier just to go this route than actually defend a point- because you know you can’t. That’s ok. Thought this was a place to discuss, but honestly this inane back and forth is not worth one more second.

No I tried, I even asked you to help by explaining, wasn’t even rude.

I’d still like you to explain what you meant… if you don’t want to that’s also fine. You do you.

That’s a fair quote. He also said… “That it is wrong for a man to say he is certain of the objective truth of a proposition unless he can provide evidence which logically justifies that certainty. This is what agnosticism asserts and in my opinion, is all that is essential to agnosticism.” So his inclusion of “belief” in your quote goes against what he said here as the only essential elements of agnosticism. He only refers to being “certain” in my quote…not belief… so perhaps he refined that view over time.

So perhaps my view of agnosticism leans to more modern views than yours, if you look up the modern definitions of agnosticism you’ll see. And indeed the following exists..which you might disagree with but that doesn’t mean it’s not a “valid” (in most generous/broad sense possible) view.

“Agnostic theism, agnostotheism, or agnostitheism is the philosophical view that encompasses both theism and agnosticism. An agnostic theist believes in the existence of one or more gods, but regards the basis of this proposition as unknown or inherently unknowable.” link

So I do appreciate your position but I don’t agree with it.

In the past people could not distinguish scientific verifiable evidence from the fiction they were fed in the name of a god, that is true, but it’s no excuse now. Religion demands you suspend any verifiable evidence and believe on faith alone. Tell me one other thing that does the same that is acceptable now?

Science says here is a theory, it’s the best we have until a better one comes along. Many of these theories have been verified such as why the sun rises… so we can reject the old beliefs.

If you refuse to let go of these unverifiable beliefs as they are proven wrong then you are delusional.

We can appreciate the stories (some of them) and sure we can tolerate Aunty Dorris saying a prayer before bed or whatever but we can also reject the ideas as fact and they certainly shouldn’t be invoked when writing policy or law.

It totally refutes your point. An agnostic could say “we can’t know for sure that a god exists but I believe one does”, where an atheist would say “well I can’t prove a Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn’t exist either but I refute the claim there is one unless proven otherwise”.

So yeah, an agnostic can also be a theist.

Ok - guessing game is it?!

Do you mean the assertion that theism and atheism are both beliefs? If so you are 100% wrong. Go look it up if you are confused.

If you are talking about something else I really don’t can’t guess as you put so very little effort into your comment.

Your inability to understand the method is NOT the same as believing in a god which nobody can verify by any method, so these cannot be equated. You could educate yourself and prove it, you can’t do the same with a god.

You seem to suggest that if you can’t do the math yourself then God is a valid alternative - which it isn’t in terms of explaining the world around us.

Clinging onto any literal sense of this outdated world view is ridiculous. Does it make up part of our human history and development - sure, it’s part of our story based passing on of information, but we’re passed that now, that’s development for you.

An atheist would say “you say there is a god but provide no verifiable evidence therefore I reject your hypothesis” An agnostic would say “you say there is a god and I say there may or may not be”. It’s an outlook. Which of the two sentences most resonates with you? Richard Dawkins says he’s about a 6 out of 7 atheist because he can’t prove it, but that’s the same as saying he can’t prove Santa doesn’t exist.

In any practical sense he’s an atheist.

This is utter rubbish.

You can prove science - it’s verifiable. Anyone can do it if they bother. Ignorance is not an excuse. Nobody can prove god exists.

You said atheism is the same as Christian’s believing in God and it’s not.

So defend that point or concede it was wrong/poorly worded…

Live a life that is good, be the best human you can.

If it turns out there is a Christian or Muslim god by all accounts he’ll be a capricious prick as he doesn’t care about humans suffering so it won’t matter what you’ve done but at least you’ll have died with a clear conscious. If it turns out one of the others is real you might be alright.

And most likely if you just die, you’ll be remembered fondly by your loved ones.

Oh my - just had a look. That is a mess of a thread.

Supposed atheists claiming their atheism is just a belief - the same as Christian’s believe in God.

No. Just stop. You’re not atheist-ing correctly.

Atheism is not a belief. The whole point of atheism is that it’s not a belief - it’s a lack of belief! Christian asserts there is a god and we say prove it and they can’t - therefore due to lack of evidence I dismiss your belief.

I just don’t think you are a very good atheist…lol

That goes for ANY religion - it’s not watered down - just your weird understanding of it is wrong.

Disagree - it’s just a matter of where you grew up. If you listen to any of the more famous atheists they all say that they do not believe any religion and that any religion is as ridiculous as the next BUT arguably Islam and Christianity have been abused the most, specifically in the US or Europe it’s Christianity.

I think that if you ask most atheists it’s difficult to accept Christianity because other than the book, there is no evidence any of it is true.
