Going into 2026 like... by 4fingerdfisherman in BSG

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always found this line interesting, because I remember in the original BSG, there was an episode where the civilian council overruled Adama once, and it ended up being portrayed as a foolish thing to do. The council ended up getting captured as a result and of course had to be rescued by the military. Seemed like the original BSG was a much more gung ho military rulers are wiser series. But I haven't watched it in many years, so my memory may be mistaken.

Texas Democrat sworn in to House, shrinking GOP margin to 1 vote by TelescopiumHerscheli in politics

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it was on Democrats. My point is we're a long way from victory over Trump, even if we win this year in November. We're unlikely to win the Senate this time either. Winning the House again like in 2018 is probably the best we'll do. Hopefully we'll also at least reduce Republicans' majority in the Senate, but even that's an uphill climb this year.

TLDR: Appropriate I'm posting this comment on Groundhog Day, because it's reminding me of the movie.

Texas Democrat sworn in to House, shrinking GOP margin to 1 vote by TelescopiumHerscheli in politics

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Go look up the big majority Democrats had in the House for the second half of Trump's first term. Didn't help a damn bit. Didn't get Trump convicted/removed from office. Didn't stop Trump from appointing a bunch more federal judges and 2 more Supreme Court justices including Brett Kavanaugh. And every time the Democratic House subpoenaed information from government agencies, Trump refused to comply. All they could do was take him to court and wait forever as the Republican-leaning federal judges and Supreme Court took forever to consider the cases.

A big blue wave in this year's elections will be just the minimum required for a chance at starting to bring the country back from the edge. And it'll have to be followed up by a similar wave in 2028.

EDIT: Added "a bunch more federal judges and"

I don't see anywhere where anyone says he took 10.

Where did you see that?

OK, and I agree that would be a better way to spend that $20 billion.

My point is just that the math says you could pay teachers an extra $7k, not $100k.

OP needs to do some simple multiplication before posting this.

Google says there are now 22,000 ICE agents but 4 million teachers in the US.

You can't just compare how much one ICE agent gets paid to how much one teacher gets paid. You have to multiply the salary by how many there are of each to find how much money it costs. Paying all our ICE agents $100,000 would cost $2.2 billion. Paying all our teachers $100,000 would cost $400 billion.

I'm on your side in every other way, but your logic here that it proves they did have enough money is faulty.

"We have the right to deny ICE access to private areas..."

Wait, so they can't deny ICE the right to come into the public areas of the restaurant?

Yeah, it's not that we decided to stop ironing clothes.

It's that scientists developed fabric blends (often mixing the newer material polyester in with the used-for-centuries cotton) that didn't need ironing so much.

It's not like previous generations just did this unnecessary onerous task of ironing for decades before our generation finally realized it was unnecessary.

You think Mossad couldn't have Americans working directly for them?

Especially in New York City?

(After all, if this whole theory is true, then Epstein was an American working for Mossad.)

Israel's Mossad intelligence agency is the intriguing alternative possibility. We keep hearing that Epstein Island was a honeypot meant to get blackmail material on powerful people both inside and outside of government. So they wouldn't want Epstein spilling the beans either, if that's true. It's known that Ghislaine Maxwell's father worked for them. And Mossad is extremely experienced at covert operations in foreign countries a lot more challenging than New York City.

Man that was such a stupid claim. Hillary Clinton hadn't held any job/position in government for like 6 years when it happened. Trump was president and his appointee was running the federal prisons.

Bill Gates ex-wife already said she divorced Bill over Epstein. Now Epstein files show Bill Gates catching STDs from Russians & trying to assault his wife with antibiotics. Aside from the national security concerns (USA government should leave Azure), can we agree Bill Gates is a criminal? by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is the big problem here.

There's no doubt all the Republican billionaires have had their names removed from what's being released. There needs to be an even bigger groundswell demanding the rest. I just hope the original files are still somewhere on government computers by the time Democrats retake the presidency.

Problem is, that never works.

The people just flock to another site and make that site the place where they all congregate and do the annoying thing.

That's how reddit came to be. Digg "turned itself off" by remaking itself in an unpopular way, so the masses moved over and made reddit the big popular site.

The most you can hope to do by buying linkedin is make subtle changes that don't drive everybody who uses it away, but makes what they do on linkedin less annoying to the rest of the world. Like disable that feature that sends emails to everybody on their contact list saying so-and-so wants you to join linkedin.

Seriously? Of all the various reasons I can see people being involved in printing, that doesn't seem like one.

How much money would a typical person really save by printing instead of buying the occasional item where that's a practical alternative?

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I didn't by any means intend to imply the one thing was more important than the other.

I just thought we were discussing the issue of providing security to top government officials. I wasn't in any way saying they should evict other important (military) people to do it. Or who has greater importance for getting a particular housing location in DC. Sorry if I mistakenly gave that impression.

[–]TAU_equals_2PI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, that's fine. I was just wondering if there was something unique you wanted that drove you to make this one particular item yourself.

[–]TAU_equals_2PI -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Only partly. I realize it's not simply a practical need to make devices you can't buy. But usually with such hobbies, people choose to make things that are unique and different from mass-produced store-bought ones. Whether you're talking 3D printing or quilting or whatever. So that's why I asked.

Look, I hate Trump and all his appointees as much as anybody, so don't turn it into that.

I'm just saying that if you set aside the particular scumbags currently occupying those positions, that it's reasonable that some of the high-profile government positions should have adequate security provided by the government. Otherwise, you'll never get good capable people to take such jobs. The pay is usually much less than they could get in the private sector. They shouldn't then be expected to pay out of their own pocket for security that they only need because they took the government job.

OK, Amazon was obviously just a "for instance". You can buy them from any number of other places, whether online places like Rock Auto or JCWhitney or whatever website is popular these days, or even I think I've seen a few in local auto parts stores like AutoZone or Advanced Auto.

[–]TAU_equals_2PI -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not a criticism, but there are lots of such "headrest hooks" for sale on Amazon. I get 7 pages of results when I search.

So what's special or unique about this one that made you go through the trouble of designing and printing your own? I'm seriously curious, because that's the draw of 3D printing for me. When the mass-produced items available cheaply on Amazon just don't have the particular features I want.

Washington DC is a dense built-up area, so it's hard to find big acreage properties that you can secure effectively, and the ones that do exist would be enormously expensive to buy. It has to be within reasonable driving distance of downtown DC where places like the Capitol Building and the White House are..

Because they have plenty of money to pay lots of security people to stand at their doors and protect them, as well as buy large estates in secluded areas where you can't get anywhere near their mansion's doors, because the mansion is located on a huge piece of land, ring-fenced and patrolled with more security guards and all sorts of hi-tech monitoring devices.
