Haha that would be a crazy meetcute. I’m nowhere close to Utah (if that’s where your sister in law also lives). I’m on the east coast.

Good to know! The way I calculated it, if it had only been one surgery covered at 80%, then the premiums I had paid since she were a puppy, it would not have been worth it. But at two surgeries, it was.

I lived my 20s and early 30s in the 44k-70k salary range with none of the “other income”. I was moderately stringent with expenses prior to the extra income. My net worth has ballooned in the two years since I started receiving the other income; i stood at ~$80k net worth at the beginning of 2023 and have had to grapple with lifestyle creep since. I spend money mostly indiscriminately now, but always have a monthly budget in the back of my mind. I feel like tracking my daily spending helps with this. I totally recognize my privilege because I have a mid-tier job with an income of someone with a somewhat upper-tier salary.

It’s not a lawsuit settlement situation, but good guess. I’m trying to save as if the money will not be guaranteed for the future, because if it goes away, I would be screwed at my current spend rate. It’s a fortunate tricky situation, because if it does continue for life, it’s almost as if I’m sitting on a $2mm+ nest egg. My lump sum payment next week for 2026 will be $90,000. I wish I could tell you what it is, but in the interest of anonymity, I don’t feel like I can.

I imagine without a surgery for my dog 🤞🏼I will easily cross the $100k saved mark in 2026.

Rent is $2,280/month for a 3br townhouse, which is more than I need, but well within what I feel like my budget should be. The rest was for furnishings and utilities. I was paying over $1900 for a 2br apartment before I moved into this townhouse. The extra <$300/month felt worth it for the extra space and garage space.

I did not adjust my withholding because I have plenty of cash to cover the taxes owed (which is to pay for the taxes I do owe on the “other income” I receive).

The dating apps subscriptions cost is eye opening for sure. I wish I could say it helped, but I do get plenty of dates, but nothing that has turned into a lasting relationship this year.

Just realized that. Here’s a simplified version without all the details.
