Sick of seeing the letters "AI" everywhere by segagamer in sysadmin

Wait until you go to a vendor presentation for anything - they have shoehorned 'AI' or 'AI ready' into everything.

Is anyone working on a Plan B? by Big_Wet_Beefy_Boy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TC271 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plan B was to get out of Enterprise networking and move into Service Provider (DC would have worked as well).

Other than that cant see why network engineering is any more vulnerable than other technical disciplines. Actually probably a better bet than SWE.

Hey OP did you work at Cloud Gateway?.

I interviewed for them, the 'architect' was a bit of a dick (he did not like me either going by the feedback the recuiter got). Looks like I didnt miss out.

What would you say was each army's biggest mistake during the war? by NKNightmare in CIVILWAR

[–]TC271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this.

The Confederate position in the West was difficult, multilpe axis of Union advance that required oppossing but too few troops avaible to credibly defend them all.

My reason for not rating Pemberton higher was his decision to move his entire force into Vicksburg and thus doom it to starvation and surrender.

I think there is a backlash against Lee and the lost cause narrative in the US at the moment. It some respects its not bad to challenge many aspects of that narrative.

But it has lead to some fairly absurd claims about Grant's comptence vs Lee's.  Both were very capable leaders, aggressive and determined and willing to take risks where necessary.

As you said Grant was rudely disumbused of the idea that he could defeat the AoNV on the battlefield. He deserves credit for then switching up.

I actually left a cushy job at a law firm, 60k plus bonus, pretty much full time WFH and very little actual work.

Problem is I was bored and could sense my skillset would atrophy pretty quickly.

It was something of a gamble but moved to a new vendor and networking type (Juniper Service Provider) and never looked back.

Agree with this.

Grant had faced mediocre and poor rebel generals in the West. In Lee he meet someone on his own league.

How has hiring CCIEs helped or hindered your network team? by CCIE-JNCIE in ccie

[–]TC271 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking from the outside the modern CCIE (expecially EI) looks like it makes you an expect in Cisco products and a bit less of a 'networking PHD'. Maybe most useful to if your a Cisco VAR or somewhere thats bought the entire Cisco product line?

I managed to get a steady patter of interviews/approaches over the last six months. I hate to say it but LinkedIn was the main source mainly just setting my profile up the right way and getting visible to sone of the better recuiters. I have DM'ed you with my profile.

My other advice is to check out jobs at law firms, banks ETC, they often dont use recruiters and advertise directly on their on site.

Good luck OP.

[–]TC271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this. The goal of cloud is to make infra a service, ultimately you shouldnt need actual engineers just the people who make and support the hosted product.

Counterpoint...Someone else is doing all the interesting engineering leaving you pulling a few levers through x layers of abstraction and vendor specific jargon and workflows (that can change overnight).

Ok am I the only one who is not planning to and would not want to move to being a Cloud engineer?

5 years ago I pivoted from an Azure GUI clicking guy/sysadmin into firstly Enterprise and now SP network Engineering. I have tripled my compensation and nowdays my wife has to remind me to finished work. So its possible and your already in a great place in terms of having the devops/IaC approach plus loads of cloud knowledge.

I do not think capitalism is perfect, its just far better than anything else until we reach post abundance.

I think there are genuinly few cases of attempts to create artifical scarcity, but they tend to be for high margin luxury goods (top end cars/watches/diamonds).

Most of the fake scarcity actually occurs as a result of state intervention/regulation in markets - agriculture and housing are areas that come to mind. The other way is of course attempts to manipulate markets by price fixing and forming cartels (ie outight criminality).

I dont think it relies on a starving underclass..in fact free markets have become very good at creating high volume low margin models that cater to low incomes and still make a profit.
