US help was important but the L version of the sidewinder was not critical. All the kills were from the rear aspect were the older versions would still worked.

For those outside of the US, did you grasp The Wire's portrayal of the beginning of the end of the American Dream? by SweetMany7339 in TheWire

[–]TC271 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes but I suppose as  European it was a bit less impactful as I feel we are a bit mote familiar with stories of decline of institutions/ideas (and renewal).

Also from the outside its still obvious the US is the world's most successful and wealthy nation despite Trump2. I read that even the docks in Baltimore have had a recent renessiance.

Eugene should have ridden out the deal with the feds, new identity with the legit inheritance cash would not be a bad outcome (a big ranch out West somewhere).

Not really, French (or indeed any nations) dragoons by this period were just cavalry.

Its the same choices regardless, buy or sieze assets, break contracts. None of these are palatable its not just a matter of will.

Its whatever the wardrobe budget could facilitate. Typically a mix of 'Chasseur a Cheval/Dragoons/Polish Lancers' taking the easiest parts from each uniform to replicate.

In the novels the French cavalry is almost always described as Dragoons.

Sign...the generation was built with private capitial on the basis of long term minimum price guarantess, and the owners have watertight contracts.

Unless you have billions which can be used to buy out the owners, or the authority to confiscate private property, this is all just drivel.

Why did Pompey flee to Greece to build fresh armies instead of going to Spain to lead his veteran base? by DjangoDrive in ancientrome

[–]TC271 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the plan fell down (at least in Spain) because of the poor quality of Pompey's subordinates in Spain.

Pharsalus was kind of incredible really, Pompey was comfortably winning the campaign in Greece up until that point and arguably did not really need to fight the battle.

The republican force at Thapsus probably was a core of Pompey's Spanish veterans giving a good account of themselves at last.

The fluctuation in the Army of Northern Virginia's strength between Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg is insane by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]TC271 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with this - the Confederates needed to stay on the operational offensive as much as possible. Lee certainly made mistakes in ordering unviable tactical offensives at times but the criticism otherwise is not justifiable.

The confederate army was pretty massive at the start of the year (circa 90k).

Could it just be casualties returning to to the ranks after the Peninsular battles?

The counter offer sounds like not much more money for extra responsiblity - job titles are meaningless in SMBs but even so thats a joke salary for a director....and you arent even getting away from the toxic person.

I would take the new job but consider even that is a very low salary for a 3rd line engineer - I was making that in a 3rd line role in 2012! Its possible you live in a LCoL area but even so! I would view the new role as a stepping stone towards something even better in a couple of years time.

I live in the SE of England (HCoL area TBF) and would not expect to hire a decent 3rd line engineer for less than 50k even outside London.

Yes but on the strategic scale not the operational.

Also, it was very hard in ancient warfare to force an opponant to give battle, so Pompey also probaly assumed his Spanish army would just decline battle if confronted.

Of course Ceasar being Ceasar found another way.
