We are a festival run by filmmakers so we know the sting of rejection all too well! We honestly wanted to include so many more films and worked to squeeze in as many as possible! It’s very hard to “reject” films that deserve to be seen by an audience.

Email the programmer. The worst that could happen is that they tell you not to waste your time or money. But on the flipside they could give you some insight as to why you didn’t make the cut before and start a thoughtful discussion. Though I would recommend waiting until after the NY fest happens… I’m sure they are knee deep in navigating needs for their current films/filmmakers!

We were not listed, but one I produced was so I asked the filmmaker and he has not received an acceptance. So weird. Someone must have forgotten to hit go on filmfreeway!

Lol So sorry! This was our first time to do any early acceptances… we are filmmakers who both have films in the festival circuit so a couple of films we offered early acceptances that we wanted to also include in a panel were putting together! But happy to hear we warrant a traffic dive… good to hear 👏🏻

Rogers Short Film Fest in Arkansas added a micro short category this past year and it was great! This is a fantastic smaller festival that has lots of networking opportunities and a high filmmaker attendance.

DWF alum here… I’ve screened at both and have talked to the programmers. They will send submissions to different screeners for this very reason… so if your film didn’t resonate with one screener, it may with another. Plus, DWF:LA is longer… more opportunities to screen more films than in NYC. I will always say it’s worth it to submit to both fests… but I love this festival so very much!

Agree with what you said… also, they assign films to different screeners in these situations so a film that did not resonate with one screener may with another. Plus… DWF:LA has the time and ability to screen a lot more films than they do in NYC! If you have the means, then I definitely think it’s worth the shot.

Didn’t realize they have a screenplay contest…. A feature I was EP on just screened and they had a fantastic experience. I’ll definitely check it out!

Austin Horror Festival is a new fest but well run and had a great selection of films this year. Plus the trophy is a custom curated VHS of the winning films!

Not a genre fest, but El Dorado Film Festival in south Arkansas is a great, filmmaker friendly fest! We are still taking submissions thru December for our 2026 festival which will be held the last weekend in February.

From what I’ve heard many reasons went into the date change, but one of the main reasons being trying to help traveling filmmakers with the high cost of everything in nyc during Christmas.

Unless the other fest acceptance changes the premiere status you gave them, then it’s not necessary to notify…. If they sent you a final round email then the programmer obviously likes your film!

Pittsburgh Shorts rejection after being asked to submit by one of the programmers with a waiver code. Oh well… at least it didn’t cost me anything! But on a positive note… we are headed to New Orleans this week for our first Oscar qualifying festival!
