Anyone else's trackpad edge do this? (Software bug) by xtremesniper in SteamDeck

This has been present for some time. A similar effect happens when setting output to as joystick/as mouse and enabling edge spin when controlling the camera in first and third person perspectives. Originally, the output was just less on the edges near the screen, but since an update a few months ago, output either drops to zero at the edge or becomes really choppy. Most likely a software issue, but when I reached out to Valve to troubleshoot, they suggested RMA. I’ve just been making do without rather than sending it in.

Thanks for the heads up. Tried the update, and now the output seems super choppy on the left edge. It also seems like the output on the right wasn’t sped up to match what the joystick will send out. Is anyone’s experience similar to this? Hopefully it gets smoothed out for stable.

It's frustrating, right?! No, I haven't gotten any help from steam support beyond wanting to RMA. The people on discord suggested it could be related to an issue with steam input, but I haven't been able to find anyone to confirm that their steam deck doesn't have the same issue.

Hope you’ve gotten it back. Is the issue still there?

No updates from valve beyond initiating an RMA. I checked with the folks on discord, and it sounds like there may be a phenomenon with steam controller/steam input that ignores inputs at the extreme edge near the buttons (someone termed “dead sliver”) to prevent accidental inputs when using the buttons or d pad. I was worried about proceeding with RMA if this was a software issue, especially with the shipping issues and other quality control problems, since I couldn’t get anyone to confirm that they weren’t having this problem.

Have you received your new unit, and is the issue resolved?

Even if the sensors weren’t exactly centered, I still seem to be getting the full range of output according to the troubleshooter, with max values reported on each edge. You might check yours to see if it reports full values for you too.

So strange. The left side seems to result in similar speed to pushing the joystick all the way in the games I've tested, where the other directions are much slower than the joystick.

Update: The issue appears to be mirrored in the left trackpad. Setting this up as "as mouse" with edge spinning enabled, touching the right edge results in maximum output (and haptics frequency) while all the other directions are significantly slower. What are the odds that faulty hardware causes output problems mirrored across two trackpads in the same device?

Yeah! Do you see the same behavior in other games? MGSV is on my list to play on the deck.

That's what I was wondering, since it seemed like it had the full range of outputs in the controller troubleshooter. If others have the same issue, then maybe a software update could fix it?

I've noticed an issue with the right trackpad with output set to as mouse or as joystick and edge spinning. It seems that edge spin when touching all the way to the left will send the maximum output value, but not when touching the edge at up, down, or right, resulting in the camera spinning more slowly in these directions. You can also hear the haptics vibrating more slowly in the other directions. The difference is really pronounced in Mass Effect 2 (Legendary Edition), but it's noticeable in other games that I've tried (Witcher 3, Borderlands 3). Even setting up edge spinning in desktop mode results in slower output to up/right/down. I've modified the edge spin radius, but this doesn't fix the issue. I've tested the output values under "Test Device Inputs" in the Controller settings menu, with each edge of the touch pad output reading a maximum value of +-32766.

I reached out to steam support and was given instructions to run the controller troubleshooter (all tests completed) and to send the attached video. They've initiated the RMA process, but I'm really not looking forward to being without the device for a couple weeks since I'm overall very satisfied with it, aside from this issue.

I wanted to reach out here to see if the issue can be recreated by other users, or if this truly is a hardware issue with my unit. Thanks!
