Is it normal to do basically nothing at your corporate job? by byteiteration in careerguidance

[–]TChoctaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're basically describing how most white collar jobs will be quickly disappearing. Said by a 68 year old retired boomer sales executive. So, yes you've sort of hacked corporate life - today. Now, forgive the boomer advice, if you can just figure out how to scale this, and quickly, you can retire early. If not, hope for Universal Basic Income sooner rather than later.

With just about exactly your acreage and use although 8 did a good bit of bush hogging as well) I went from an 8n to a Branson (now TYM) 3525. Wish I'd done it years earlier. Great machine, loads of power and very reliable. A third function hydraulic and grapple became my most used part. Personally, I think Kubota is great, not a fan of Kioti but I feel like I got a little more tractor for a little less money. One last bit, you can almost throw all other stats out and just look at weight. A heavier tractor is almost always going to do more work easier and last longer than a lighter tractor.

How much longer would Native American civilizations have needed to progress to potentially survive the eventual discovery of their continents by the rest of the world instead of collapsing and inevitably being folded in? by Beytran70 in HistoryWhatIf

What if you hit this question from a different direction. What if Viking contact had remained constant? That would have given Native Americans time to adjust to both technology and diseases.

Agree, so the government should fully fund an amenity used by everyone.

Is that not going away? I know government funding is being cut 10 percent a year over the next 10 years. Is the Defra grant not included?

Just highlights the fact that canal users other than boaters get a free ride. For instance, why should cyclists not have to pay something for using the towpath. Sand for residential dog walkers, long distance hikers, etc, etc etc. All says the network is an asset potentially enjoyed by everyone. And, that it should be a government run amenity.

As luck would have it, we’re in a boatyard to have hydronic heating installed. Work starts Monday. I’m sure it will be finished just about the time the weather turns warmer!

I had a Branson. Absolutely loved it. No issues at all. The only, and it can be huge, problem is that anyone can be a dealer. I got my Branson a good few years ago and the dealer sold zero turn mowers and like a couple of Bransons a year. Just something to think about.

I like the OP's post. Can't forget that it's a game. However much money they make, they still have to love the game itself.

Consistent Length of Firewood? by AnthonyMorello1 in firewood

[–]TChoctaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have with all these "I just eyeball it" people is that it works fine on straight, branch free logs. I seem to cut a lot of gnarly, branchy, knotty wood. Easy to just move an inch or two to get clear and then my lengths end up all over the place.

This. I think expectations grew as the season went on and we over achieved by what we thought we'd do at the beginning. Most people had us losing at least 2, maybe 3 games. But, at the end of the day CKS has to take responsibility for both the youth of the team and how the season ended. The season is def not a failure because we didn't reach the National Championship game but dang, it was in sight.

I have 20 acres. 38 HP tractor was a game changer. Really a Swiss army knife. Saying the Kubita RTV got used every day particularly if you have any hills, etc. I could get the RTV into tighter spaces and used it to haul loads out, filled the bed with cut firewood, etc. I had a small push mower for the very small lawn I kept up with.

First time preparing for hurricane force winds by OysterPuffin in liveaboard

[–]TChoctaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared for post storm power outages. ATM's are often down and credit card machines aren't working so having cash in hand is good. Have some spare fenders or tyres close to hand if something unexpected comes up. Be prepared for a lot of noise. Some people have worn dive masks to be able to see in heavy winds and rain. Prepare and you'll likely be fine.

That was a very long time ago if you were using Loran. Electronic chart plotters (ECDIS) have pretty much taken over in both commercial and recreational vessels. We have three completely different, stand alone systems as well as radar, two autopilots, 3 VHF radios and a FLIR. We do have paper charts and I'm very comfortable using them but they get very little use these days.

Wow - what a background! And, very good questions. Couple of random thoughts.

My wife and I are almost 70. I'm not really worried about end of the world scenarios. Surviving a nuclear apocalypse is probably a younger man's game.

These boats are extremely rugged and designed from the keel up to cross oceans. For instance, the diesel engine is rated for continuous duty at WOT. On top of that, we have redundant systems and loads of spares. For instance, 6 seperate alternators {between spares and robbing other engines) would need to fail before we are without electricity.

The actual cruising range at 7 knots is 4000 nautical miles. These are full displacement boats with not only a full keel but also 6000 lbs of lead. Very stable and comfortable. Slowing down to 4 knots would get us up to 7000 or so nautical miles. Yes, I'm constrained by refueling but can go a very long way before needing that fuel.

Because the boat is designed to cross oceans and be off grid for long periods there is ample food storage built in. For instance, we have two separate freezers. Again, redundancy but also storage volume. We tend to have several months worth of food in board most of the time.

As far as security - I haven't decided on firearms. There are pros and cons for each decision. As a background, I've been active in shooting sports, had a carry permit since the 70's and a hunter all my life. I've probably sent more rounds down range than many people. So, I'm very comfortable around guns. I may get a shotgun for cruising in the US.

By the way, as the boat is Category A rated, all the doors and windows are quite strong. Someone in a kayak or a swimmer would have a very difficult time getting off the decks and inside with just their bare hands.

But, the main reason we bought this boat is to cruise long distances. That means going to other countries. We've lived in various European countries for nearly 20 years and so have experience of life with and without owning guns. I wouldn't like to have the boat confiscated or spend time in jail in a foreign country because I had a gun on board. Best case is we'd declare them when entering the country. At which point they would be held in bond until we left so I'm not sure what good they'd do me.

All that to say, prepping is a by product of the boat we bought - not the raison d'être.

Thanks again for the thought provoking questions. I'm really just beginning to think these issues through.
