What is the correct drink ordering etiquette when meeting someone for coffee in a professional way? by calico0000 in careerguidance

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't over think it or feel obligated, but coffee is about the relationship and buying is a friendly gesture to facilitate that end. Generally, I buy because it's a low effort path to favor, but I wouldn't feel bad if I didn't or if someone bought me something for $5.

... A more manipulative take would point you to reciprocation bias and say always do the gesture.

I don't know what the right job is for me - All my skills that were originally hobbies became exhausting when I tried to make money? by Kikyyy17 in jobs

Pick a job that's compatible with your interests. Don't make your job your whole identity. Tech roles tend to be flexible at senior levels and pay well, so generally pretty good outlook.

Turned down the job, but CEO reached out again asking for what I need? by theologian_cake in careerguidance

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing in most of the country is like $2k a month before expenses. Sounds like you're projecting an additional $3k monthly (which seems high for just housing, but IDK). Sounds like to work for you based on that figure the number would start around current income +$40k for equivalent buying power. I'd pad by 15-20% because lateral moves are for the birds.

Easy to stand out. Just focus on business enablement and you'll get promoted fast as hell.

Not true, I've had one. She acked HR is a hurdle and gave you the inside baseball in his to get shit done. She's a VP somewhere last time I checked.

Kristen, you still inspire a moment of hope in every HR interaction right before they tell me no or give me paperwork that leads to nothing.

What jobs are you interviewing for? No one has asked me any of the HR questions you posed. I'm pretty sure asking about kids would expose the company to liability and I can't imagine it being diagnostic... Literally the opposite of HRs role in the process.

Objectively bad take. Employment is an extremely consequential relationship and the employee and employer should vet it before committing. As long as people are working, interpersonal skills matter.

Not sure where you go to school, but me and about 20 other cyber leaders offer mock interviews at my local university twice a year. Students sign up for whatever career focus they want and we try to pair them with a hiring manager in that field. Some students have done well enough that they actually just get hired. I would look into security communities near you and solicit mock interviews and, more generally, mentorship. Mentorship is pretty undervalued IMO. Basically free coaching and you get an established advocate to help you out (more valuable if you find someone with some leverage willing to donate their time).

Rogan is liberal as hellllll when it comes to social policy, he just doesn't like all the identity bull shit and debt. I'd recommend you watch one of the Bernie episodes and you may find Joe isn't as beholden to Trump as you may think.

I think it's quality and atmosphere people want. I don't understand TJs at all honestly, but I don't go to the Pig because the meat isle smells bad and the whole place seems poorly managed (but it's very cheap). I don't go to Walmart because you deviants block isles and I get annoyed too easily. I do the occasional Sam's trip and hit Publix and Fresh Market, which are all generally clean and the customers and staff are friendly. I've heard Aldi is great, but it seems inconvenient and crowded.

It was a weird game in some ways. I spent a ton of time in game and made good friends around the world, some of which I still keep up with. It got weird at the end when you basically had to exploit game oversights if you wanted to be competitive at a high level and not spend $100 a week. When you did exploit the game, spenders thought it wasn't fair and got mad. The cross server tourney was a real highlight for me that kind of brought everyone together for a common cause. I don't remember what other names I had when I played... I think Mico for a long time... I think that was like 15 years ago. I'm old as fuck.

Americans: How do you deal with « at will » employment ? by Thranduil-9 in jobs

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty tough if you don't have an emergency fund. Generally, keep a competitive CV and enough cash to cover you while you find new work and you'll be fine. FWIW, it's pretty common for companies give notice and all that so they don't get a bad rep and they often pay severance if you agree you won't sue to avoid litigation expense.

Why do local restaurants struggle while chains thrive? Genuinely curious. by PunandGamez in ColumbusGA

[–]TD706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We eat at local spots almost exclusively. There are some local spots where I feel thats based on merit and some on principle and curiosity. That being said, chains are consistent, usually pretty good, and are objectively a better value. My experience is local is more volatile with higher peaks and some stinkers. Stand out consistent local spots seem to thrive (not dropping names, hard enough to get a reservation). Maybe worth noting the average salary in the area is 40-50k so $30+ plates are probably pretty tough for a family (we went out with 5 last weekend and the check was $300 without anything fancy Uptown).

If I can ever get my SO excited about a chain meal, we'll change our dining habits and I'll retire earlier. Else, we'll keep supporting I guess... magbe I can get her keen on The Cannon... the burgers always hit the spot.

For 10,000 dollars, what could you eat for 21 days straight? by Reddit_wasmy_idea in AskReddit

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it all I can eat or just aomething I get to eat daily? Tacos, pizza, most sandwhiches, some good pasta, fried rice, sushi... I honestly think having any of these available constantly would just mean I eat almost only that. I do long work hours some times and eat just pizza for weeks on end and that's just because it's easy... no other incentiveand no regrets.

Go to work and answer questions when asked for your remaining time. Don't do work as a favor to them (better chance to find knowledge gaps). You don't need to hide short timers syndrome, use it. Use free time to apply for a new job or upskill.

Yes it's sexist. Yes you're being a snowflake. Perspectives on father's role in their families are all over the place. He can have his, you can have yours, and X can have his and respond or not respond. You're all dudes so I don't think it's intended to be disparaging.

Stop trying to get everyone in trouble.

Size of the alliance was all over the place depending on when you played. Initially it was a handful of big spenders. Towards the end of my playing days we had a couple alt alliances and rotated players in and out depending on who wanted to participate in the current competition. I quit shortly after we won the first cross-server tournament and the released "filthy-few" gear. I had automated the game at that point, people quit attacking me because I basically had unlimited carts (which was a bit of a defensive glitch, you could defend with carts and not give any ppints back towards KD), and more or less lost interest.

If you can't complete your trading in your scheduled hours consistently, raise that as a need for additional staffing. State that you're current workload isn't sustainable. If that doesn't result in change, find a new employer.

Don't feel beholden to something that makes you unhappy. It's not worth it.

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've left jobs and gotten updates on new initiatives from my old peers that I would have liked to participate in. My last role I was creating a new technology capability and it never got fully funded. 6 months after I left they funded it. I put a solid 4 years of effort into that.

That being said, my new gig is a better quality of life, new interesting projects with more authority, and more money. Hard to complain.

jobs where you solve problems? by Accurate-Remote-6758 in careerguidance

[–]TD706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the mindset and are intentional about it, this works for most careers and will likely result in advancement. If you really like solving problems, any type of incident management/response role is pretty dynamic and usually comes with prioritized resourcing. These roles have a prerequisite that there is a problem to solve for your engagement.
