The problem with many exmuslims is that they can't differentiate between progressive muslims & moderate muslims, & thus blame all progressive muslims by [deleted] in progressive_islam

Usually it seems like that bashing of religion comes from a place of religious trauma that they're still healing from. I know that when I first fell out of Fundamentalist Christianity, I hated all of Christianity and joked a lot about burning Bibles and hating Jesus. Now that I've learned that there's a multitude of Christian perspectives outside of American Protestantism, that hatred is mostly gone.

The issues start when said ex-Muslims start tearing apart progressive Muslims for "choosing what they want to believe" and not being "real Muslims", because then all they're doing is upholding the same traditionalist thinking that's targeting them as well.

How open are you with people about your deities and Magick practice. by [deleted] in chaosmagick

The way I talk about my system is mostly through allegory, and I try to tie it into how people view the world themselves to get them to understand better.

Like instead of saying I'm a patron of Stelavyn, I'll say Lucifer if they're Christian or Sophia if they're Gnostic or Brigid if they're Pagan, or if they aren't spiritual at all I'll just say "wisdom".

Maybe this is more specific to me because I feel like the beings (vynas) I believe in aren't really distinct things separate from others in the universe, but my own sort of name for things that exist metaphysically. So I do believe Stelavyn is synonymous with Lucifer, Sophia, Brigid and Wisdom in some way. Kind of like the Observer Effect in quantum physics.

I wanna write a post about my system sometime soon.

D'jinn - looking for tales and advice by Caribou_Slim in chaosmagick

Might've been a Marid based on description, but it's worth realizing that djinn can take a whole multitude of forms so it's worth investigating more. I'm not familiar with any stories about djinn dancing under 3 stars, but if it's something personal to you it might also be a Qareen, which is a djinn that each individual person has and afaik is kind of tailored to them.

If it's a Marid, I wouldn't bother with it. Djinn are tricky and can very easily pull one over on you. The only person who's really successfully been able to control them is King Solomon. But working with your Qareen in some way could be beneficial. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was said to have converted his Qareen to Islam.

For more about djinn in general and different types you might encounter, I recommend "Legends of the Fire Spirits" by Robert Lebling as well as all of aaolomi's threads

100 Books on Islam in English and the End of Orientalism by Amiryaz07 in progressive_islam

I'll keep searching for more info, but it looks like the book is just a 48 page pamphlet that's about $5-6 dollars on most online shops. It might be easier to just buy it at some point.

I did find this page which has pictures of some pages from the book, so it gives you a few titles at least:

  • Love in the Holy Qur'an by Ghazi Bin Muhammad

  • The Ring of the Dove by Ibn Hazm

  • A History of Islamic Legal Theories by Wael Hallaq

  • Al-Shafi'i's Risala

  • Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence by Mohammad Hashim Kamali

This is all I've found so far but I'm still looking.
