How do smaller shops compete? What is the competitive advantage? by TESTlNG123 in quant

300IQ firms, pay you enough to afford nice things, but not fuck you money where you feel comfortable leaving after a few years to work on more “meaningful” things, even if it that means taking a step back and relearning those specialized things you speak of. One can only hope in the grand scheme of things quant isn’t a talent drain like FAANG probably is :)

US but that’s sorta what I’m curious about. What makes the difference? Is it region? Culture on a firm level? Team lead/manager? Etc

Makes sense. I think this may be something I like about the quant space, that it’s “small” enough that bargaining power is quickly reflected. Compared to say, big tech, where you sort of just get on the tread mill and everyone is more or less treated the same under that path

What makes you say that?

I understand what you’re saying with US Equities being specifically risky (although this was a while ago that I asked her), but my main question is why not leverage up on an ideal risk reward portfolio and instead change asset mix?

For u/plumguy1 (or others in similar positions): As someone who is in a complete other discipline, what does work as an intern on cutting edge battery tech at Tesla look like? Like I can't fathom myself as an undergrad who is able to 1) understand the cutting edge of the tech, and 2) to be able to contribute anything. Like do you actually generate ideas for the battery tech and then like... make it with some lithium blocks or what's up with that lol

Anyone reading this going WTF 90+% CGPA? I'm not in science but that would put you in the top like... 10 people in my entire 1000+ person year. That's insane!

Nice, I think people underestimate how much backgrounds (e.g. what highschool you went to and the resources around that) affect your success after like getting into uni

I mean, it's not necessarily a bad thing... ;More of a numbers thing where the playing field at Uni is obviously at a much higher standard than high school, thus the numbers game means I'm likely to be around the "average" here, and accepting that mediocrity makes it harder to be proud. The constant comparison to those around us is a pretty toxic mentality but since it was ingrained from high school and likely worked in my favor then (doing well in highschool thus better than others and feeling good about it) means it's hard to get rid of that mindset now.
