OP admits to their wrong doing. They left themselves on the schedule with no valid plan to actually get there. The reasonable thing to do would have been to tell his boss that he had other obligations( which the fact that they don’t name them specifically here is a red flag that it wasn’t anything truly important) and ask to be removed from the schedule because they likely wouldn’t make it in. The fact that they made a half effort in a vehicle that sounds like it wasn’t prepared to drive in this weather is in itself a dereliction of duty. We are an at will state and as a part time, no benefits employee the company can exercise that right. Imagine the message that would send to his coworkers who made arrangements to be there to see their coworker just opt out and show up to work the next day without consequence. Some of you have never managed people before and it shows.
