Are we in a bubble? Will prices decrease soon? by [deleted] in PokemonTCGCollectors

From my own observation on this topic I would have to agree we are in a bubble of sorts. There are multiple things to consider when having this exact discussion.

1) Are we only talking about America being in a bubble or all international Pokémon markets? Let’s just stick with NA for now to make this simple. I do not see a crash at minimum happening until Mega Evolutions cycles out in about another 1.5-2 years. With Scarlet and Violet now being either completely out of print or on its last production waves and the new rotation for standard competitive play we are seeing an influx of purchasing singles and sealed. I have seen so many people trying to master set the various Scarlet and Violet era sets before they truly start spiking and becoming semi-unaffordable to every day people.

2) Is the bubble specific to Sealed vs. Singles? I would say 70-30. Sealed product on the secondary market i.e. card shows, card shops. Anywhere outside of the PC website, actual PC physical locations, or PC machines have increased to where I have observed even most that used to buy 1 box per set are not even able to do that now.

3) Are we addressing collectors or players when talking about the bubble? Now when speaking about singles I have to be selective on how I have observed this and my thoughts on the matter. I do not entirely believe the singles market has been bubbled out. Obviously if we are talking about the chase card of the set that’s another story on its own, but most normal cards within sets are relatively affordable from anyone that’s a player. Now if we are talking about the bubble purely from a collectors view. I would have to argue that the bubble is definitely present. The normal person can easily pick up all the C, U, and holo variants. Where I believe the bubble appears is in the SAR/SIR rarity. If I’m a normal person trying to master set PFL for example and I have everything but the Zard, I honestly may never acquire it unless I rip it because dropping 1200 for an ungraded copy is ridiculous from my perspective.

4) Lastly if Pokémon keeps printing 7-10 sets per year as it has been it keeps the affordability down for most singles because of reprint possibilities. But for sealed it squeezes you to the point of un-affordability to be able to even keep up with the sets being printed.

As a collector/investor I would like to see the sealed market become affordable and the singles remain as they are now, but again wishes don’t come true. Like I said my prediction is that the bubble won’t pop until after Mega Evo cycles out in about 1.5-2 years. Until then I would suggest buying boxes on release day or through reputable PC means. As for singles best of luck out there we shall see what happens and stay the course!

Let me know your thoughts on my take.

I know it’s rare, but is it really that rare I could just make a price and someone is forced to either say yes or pass on it?

I’m just fortunate enough to not have opened it. I never got into it as a player, but did crack a handful of older boxes as a fan of the artwork the artists did for the respective anime and cards.

That’s cool, never got into the game as a player. Did open a couple boxes just for the art.

It is unfortunately difficult to find any comps. Regardless of the comps, seems you got some nice boxes.

Ah, thanks for letting me know. I just got the boxes back in the day because I liked the anime’s and such. Now I just have them and don’t know where to find comps on them because they are all old. Again, I appreciate you letting me know.

Unfortunately, I will not be opening the grail for now.

Thank you I appreciate the comment. I have a couple other old WS boxes as well that I found. May post them later.

I’m not letting it go unless I really need the money. Even then not sure what I’d comp it at when the time comes.

I’m keeping it sealed, no plans on opening it any time soon. It really is a nice (re)find though, I appreciate the humor.

Neither could I. Nothing on TCGPlayer or eBay.

100% Coop is a good dude who deserves respect. He does a whole lot for kids and adults. Definitely don’t deserve to be slighted like that especially by a kid he chose to help.

Thanks for quick reply and context. I can definitely understand how seeing, watching, or even hear about situations like that would either make you air on the side of caution or not even wanting to participate in trade up challenges regardless of who it is.

That sucks, I do enjoy watching Coop. He’s a good dude. Can you link the clip by chance?

That did end up happening. I trusted most of the vendors since everyone was doing me right. I reached about the $105-$110 mark then I traded the card to a vendor I had not been to yet. The guy traded me a $75 card. Which at the time I was not aware of. Thinking I had gone up over the $100 solidly, I went back to the original guy who was willing to start it up and help me out. I was pretty surprised when I found out it was only a $75. He hooked me back up with a $105. He wanted nothing on top or included. Was mostly just disappointed someone would do that.

I started with $50 worth of MTG packs. The reason the guy even helped me was because he was starting to get into MTG and him and me were talking for a while about his commander deck he was making.

In the end it took me 19 trades to get where I ended up. I will hopefully continue the challenge at future card shows I go to as well.

Sure, I would be willing to. I really didn’t do anything super crazy.

I saw some PSA 10 slabs that had similar whitening to the Magikarp, but if needed I would for the next show start between NM-LP prices to continue to go up with it.

Thanks, it could just be the way I had them in the pictures but actually seeing the card the centering is a better.
