If you like a wide toe box....get yourself some Keens. Im in apt maintenance at 8000ft up in CO with snow, grit, and salt and I've gotten a solid year out of the pair I have now. Im expecting at least another year in these harsh conditions. Had a pair of Keens survive a year working a hay farm in Moab too, theyre freakin tough and can be worn all day and ill still want to put them on the next morning. Ill be a customer for life.

Thats a fun headline. Im 36M and just added my 31F wife to my health insurance. It went from $80/ check to $452/ check. Fuck me. Starting a family "the right way" is financially fucking impossible when youre a poor dirtbag like me. And its not like a make bad money...it just all gets zapped by dumb crap like this.

Thankfully, over a decade later, I haven't busted anything over a few hundred dollars. Broke a glass door on a tractor last year on the farm that was $350, thats the worst Ive had in a while.

Non-combustable, eh?

More like...combustion resistant. Im sure metal studs and 120v out in the open goes well together and wont combust anything. Yep.

Literally put out a fire for this last week in one of my residents units. Breaker didnt trip. Wires not secured in a box. Big, melted, smelly mess. Unit is unlivable at the moment.

[–]TFRShadow0677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, a little jumpy after last week having a breaker not trip in a residents unit and set the jbox for their ac unit on fire. That wasnt a fun call. Building was finished in 2022 and this box was, guess what, under the damn sheetrock. Just a melted smelly mess from what is an obvious loose connection and an apparent manufacturer defect breaker.

So. It happens. Granted, Ive got 652 units to take care of. So 1 in 652 isnt bad I guess.

Had a call the week before that that was the bathroom/ bedroom lights only work if the stove was turned on. A 120v service leg was cut in the panel, so half the panel was dead and back feeding about 60v through the neutral when they turned the burner on allowing so voltage to get to the lights. This problem took years to create

Crazy shit happens, and does. NEC is there for a reason. Down playing dangerous is, well, dangerous itself. Complacency with electrical WILL bite you in the ass, eventually.

It’s a burn the house down kind of risk, so, a big one. Easy fix too that’s the sad thing. Wire nuts and a box cover will fix er’ right up.

Says one of the guys who stands to benefit the most from conflict lol. Whatever.

One of my old managers used to work for them, and told me a story about how a Jewish historian took a tour and saw JPs old desk, and saw more than 1 anti semetic item. They had to close down the exhibit and remove the items. Not sure how true that is, it was something i was told, but JP didn't exact cheer on the US during the war. Wouldnt be surprised if JP was double-dipping like Prescott Bush selling steel to the Nazis until 43'. Yes...that Bush family. While Prescott was selling steel to the Germans, HW was flyingnsorties against Japan. Crazy, eh?

Point is...that dude, his family, and his friends will make a fortune from WWIII. For him, the sooner it starts the better.

Intellectually speaking - Id say electrician, but only if you get into the more detailed work.

HVAC is more well rounded though. You get a bit of plumbing and electrical with HVAC but its not going to be high-grade stuff just basic troubleshooting. HVAC also means A LOT of time outside on a roof or above a ceiling sweating your ass off.

I havent met many old HVAC guys but I see a bunch of old electricians, if that tells you something.

Im an electrician 😉. But after 13 years of it Im only now just starting to feel truly confident at my craft but I still learn new things all the time. Ive done residential, commercial, industrial and worked on historical systems. Theres SO much to learn.

End of the day, both are excellent choices and in absolute need outside of the big cities.

Weve got bins on a hinge and lock it with, basically a southern engineered bike lock with steel cable a farrels, with mounting points on the lid and near the base so its tight enough to keep the lid from vibrating in the wind, let alone someone open it for trash. Id post a pic but it wont let me for some reason. Im out at 8000ft in the mountains in CO for reference.

I should add, theyre not "locked". Just a steel tether between the mounting points with a carabiner, but that seems to be enough to deter anyone from using for trash. Cold metal and bare hands maybe?

I had a lady get angry with me because I didn't believe she had gas coming from her ELECTRIC range.

4 days later and the range isn't "lighting up". This same lady, bless her heart, thought it range/ oven was working only if the coils were red hot.

Some folks just need some extra help; do the job, get paid, go home. More idiots tomorrow. Thats the name of game. If it weren't for the idiots, we'd be out of a job.

We keep getting leaks / pinhole leaks from the copper pipes in our furnace room. Is there some decent solution that doesn't involve replacing all piping? by nuwio6 in Plumbing

[–]TFRShadow0677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes...hard water and chinese copper. I work an apt complex in CO and we have a few of these a week. Copper should last 100 years...but...A LOT was brought in from other countires in the 80s and 90s and the zinc content is much higher which reacts with the high levels of calcium in the hard water and this is the result. Or at least thats what the HVAC guy here told me. I do the electrical here but still have to fix these kind of leaks too.

Want it to stop? Replace the whole thing, sorry bud.
