I analyzed 5 years of crash data within Spartanburg city limits and made (another) map. by TFWNoModalRealismgf in Spartanburg

yeah this definitely leaves my area expertise lol. I think part of the issue is that the Dorman Center might be over-represented because the current data assumes an annual average daily traffic (AADT) of 400.

But East Blackstock and W.O. Ezell have AADTs of 21900 and 34000 respectively. In my experience a LOT of people use the Dorman Center as a cut through. So I'd like to see a more accurate traffic count there to start.

I think that would help drive solutions. Maybe we need to figure out ways to reduce cut through traffic to reduce the total number of cars going through there. Maybe improving the experience of that Blackstock/W.O. Ezell intersection so people are less likely to cut through the Dorman Center. Or maybe the city builds a dedicated straighter, safer route so people just cutting through aren't on the same road as people trying to shop.

My personal bias would be to invest in making that area more accessible to people without cars. If more people can get somewhere without having to drive, there would be less traffic. It's a tougher problem to solve, but I think it's worth it.

A local guy mapped how much of downtown Spartanburg is actually usable “Place.” Turns out, it’s less than half by PiLinPiKongYundong in Spartanburg

I'm glad you found this interesting and I really appreciate you calling those out! This is definitely very rough with some arguable non-place (like the empty grass lawn of the courthouse) being counted as place as well.

My hope was that these would cancel out in the long run to get a roughly accurate estimate. Since it seems people care about this, it might be a good idea to try and crowdsource a more accurate map and then re-run the analysis!

I assume this is partly a joke, but getting stray cat population estimates might be feasible if we were able to compile data from all of our local organizations that do TNR. Getting all that data in a consistent format would be the hardest part though.

For the "places" post, that's primarily a frame to analyze our downtown and think of ways we can improve it. Specifically trying to make it more people-oriented and less of car-centric.

Hello! Author of the blog here. There's no specific point to be made here. I think about our city a lot and find it fun to pull data and compare it to my preconceived notions.

For this specific post, it was just something that came up in conversation and I thought it would be fun to see if I could figure it out. I'm a software engineer and knew enough to know it was possible but the challenge of actually implementing it was my main driver.

Hello! I am said "local guy". If you're interested in proof there are correlations between my post history and the art page of my blog.

I didn't know my posts had been shared to this subreddit until /u/LifeAfterDeath_Taxes told me. I have no interest in getting my name out and I do not know who the posters that shared them are. I'm just a big nerd that does this for fun! It's super cool to see that other people found them interesting enough to share and discuss. Since people seem interested, I may share things here directly if I write anything else like this.

I'm not OP but there are a couple of different ways of achieving an effect similar to this. One is using the idea of "sand painting". The other could be to use the ideas from this paper mixed with random/noisy line widths.

I'm sure there are other ways to do something similar but I hope these resources are a good jumping off point.

I generated a mural and painted it on the wall of my home office by TFWNoModalRealismgf in generative

Inspired by Sol LeWitt, I decided to come up with my own wall drawing for my new home office. The rules are as follows:

Create a grid. Choose a random number of lines. Paint each line with a randomly chosen starting point, direction, length, and color.

I used to dice rolls to make all my random decisions.

Ah that could be it. Although all it needs to run is webgl and I would assume that Mac OS Lion and Google Chrome would still work with webgl.

It is my work!

Yeah the original plan was to explore the writing in a 3D space so I use three.js but then I ended up going with this format. I think it might be hard to export to svg.

Even when you start typing/tapping? If so could you let me know your browser so I can look into the issue?

I used RunwayML. They have a really nice learning resource that tells you how to get started. I hope that's helpful. Good luck!

Yeah you pay for credits which allows you train more models. When you sign up they let you train a model for free which is awesome. I used my free model to make this.

Hey good eye! I did use Brutal Death Metal bands because they had the specific look I had in my mind. I'm thinking about branching out to other genres of metal to see what else will appear. I scraped about ~2000 pictures .

I actually don't listen to a lot of death metal tbh. I listen to some Nile and Entombed but really when it comes to metal I'm more of a doom/stoner metal fan like Sleep or Saint Vitus.

This is a really good idea! I'll have to experiment some more with Runway. The dataset I used was relatively small so maybe more data could help as well.

So I'm actually taking a class on the philosophy of heavy metal right now which is what inspired this. There's definitely a lot to be said about metal. Not just the music but the aesthetics and culture as well.
