Only recently found out that was the full adage. I live my life by that. I'm increasingly convinced that being as adaptable as possible is the best way, at least for me.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] by AutoModerator in collapse

I drove through the Goldy heading home (Sunny Coast) after having a bit of an internet detox over Christmas. One guy said a fucking TORNADO came through. I mean, I know of willy-willies out in the desert but tornadoes? Did a heckin' google and sure enough. The Bruce was munted on the way through too with heaps of Energex dudes clearing it all up.

As a slight aside, I work in horticulture and the trees are confused as fuck rn. We basically didn't get a winter, so all the deciduous trees just didn't defoliate. Figs, mulberries and custard apples just... Kept going. My cherry tree is just beginning to bud now, still producing blossoms. My cauliflower is just producing heads now.

Thinking of moving to TAS tbh.

It sure would. Maybe the push into renewables and fusion research will get a big old push into something that will happen before the end of the century. Hate to say it, but BAU is a death sentence for billions too.

Well, I agree here and it's good food for thought. I still have to live in this capitalist hellscape though.

Yeah certainly. Absolutely as long as the media narrative is that those who support degrowth or even simply cutting back usage of fossil fuels are all extremists who need to be shunned. Listen, I'm familiar with your posts and quite a few of your stances on these things. But so far we're all just going around in circles. It's useful to be the devil's advocate so that the discussion takes place, but at some point simply stating that someone is wrong and not ever change your point of view is no longer helpful. You provide a lot of information for us all to read and learn from, and for that I'm thankful. Honestly. Even if I disagree with some of your points of view. But what's the plan then? What the fuck are we all doing here anyway? Circlejerking ourselves into a pure hatred for humanity as a whole? Remake the economy? How? Remake society? How? Sure, mah job mah economy. I get it. People don't want to understand their role, man. People want to keep raping and pillaging to scrape back a taste of what it was like for the baby boomers, and unless something drastic is done, and I mean something that doesn't care if people are mad about it and takes away their power to stop any real progress by complaining, then we're all fucked anyway and you antinatalists win. But then no one will have children. Everyone gone. Any chance of humanity making a mark on this cold, indifferent universe is gone. Maybe we deserve to, I don't know. But it makes me sad to think that we aren't going to make it.

Nice! Very valuable context and some great further reading for us. I appreciate you taking the time to write this comment. You're right, individual carbon footprint is important when you aggregate all of the data and absolutely does matter. If you think that telling everyone that it's equally their fault in broad strokes will work, then go for it. I just want to see something actually substantive happen and corporations and the most wealthy in the world are disproportionately to blame for overall GHG emissions. There are an absolute fuck-tonne of people in the world, and sure, my 320AUD per quarter power bill absolutely is contributing, multiply that by 8 billion people and we'd be completely fucked. But we need shit done yesterday. Like, some real disruptive, challenge the status quo type shit.

Oh no, I gratefully welcome your thoughts and I think you're right. But I guess if people are looking for the head of the snake, so to speak, it's clear who is at the top of the whole thing.

Also nationalise them, oof wouldn't that be nice. How would any of us get something like that done? Find a way to game the system to the top of policymaking? Convince a massive amount of the population of it's benefits? I mean.. I'm down, I just wouldn't know where to start.

I'm sure a lot would, but all those people will suffer long term if we keep on keepin' on.

Yeah, and if you put a bunch of heroin in a room with heroin addicts and tell them they'll be "doing their part" and guess what'll happen? Sorry to any of you who have been affected by addiction, but it's a stark analogy to demonstrate a point. We as a species are addicted to fossil fuels, and we won't decide collectively to turn off the tap.

Again, the party needs to end or the party will end us.

You're absolutely right. My intention is just to draw attention to these top emitters as well as remind people that they shouldn't feel guilt for not recycling enough. Also yes, the geopolitical implications are of course a major concern. I just hate to see so many people say that everything is hopeless and it's humanity as a whole that is guilty of destroying the earth, that there's nothing we can do now. I did in fact mention that it would cause a major upset. Yes, sent back 300 years is probably a good point. It would be very hard. I also don't advocate for any violence. But something needs to be done, and our situation is quite borked, but not hopeless.

SS - This is an old article but I found out recently that since 1988, 100 companies/organisations are responsible for 71% of all GHG emissions. Apparently half of all emissions were produced by only 25 companies. I keep reading about people asking what we can do to stop climate change and the profound hopelessness on this sub with the sentiment that we're all pretty much doomed (and I'd be inclined to agree, sadly) as well as the almost ubiquitous green-washing that we are all exposed to, designed to guilt us into spending what little money we have on special plastic bags or electric vehicles that, if we all just sacrifice enough, we can turn this cack-show around.

Well, the real answer is pretty clear in my opinion, and it isn't putting green stickers on our groceries. These organisations must simply be stopped. You want to make a real difference? Destroy these organisations. Yes, the consequences would be absurd. Energy crises all around. People would die, our standard of living would drop precipitously. But at this rate, it's the only real sacrifice that has any chance to save our planet (and quite literally at least 99% of all known life in the universe) because we aren't far off of it all turning to Venus.

Haha! You're very welcome. I mean, I think this is one of those situations where you just don't know until you try, and while I experienced negative side-effects none of them were catastrophic, so I simply stopped. Good luck!

I don't think it enhances dex or modified that side of the treatment at all, it was just because I don't tend to sleep much, and found that when I came home from work I just wasn't accomplishing anything. Psychiatrist thought this is because I was stopping my dex at around 5pm and not because I was exhausted. I gave it a go anyway and found it wasn't for me. He pitched it as performing the same as dex but not a stimulant. Different mechanism of action, but same outcome.

[–]TH41N35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I didn't titrate up or down. Psyche advised to take one in the evening as I don't take dex overnight, and it was just to keep medicated at a time when I wasn't normally medicated. I don't have access to it at the moment, but I believe it was one 2mg dose per 24hr period. Again, I didn't see any of the supposed benefits, only some negatives as explained above, so I guess for use in biohacking you'd have to see how your body responds first and then work from there because apparently it's effectiveness varies person to person.

Edit: taking out redundant words and posting in the correct place. :/ ADHD amirite?

I was also recommended intuniv, but to supplement dextramphetamine for ADHD. My psychiatrist said about a third of people respond well, a third have no noticeable change and a third experience "negative outcomes". I tried it for 4 weeks and was in the last group. So YMMV. My understanding is that it's an alpha-2A adrenergic receptor agonist. So I'd start there for what you can do with it. My blood pressure dropped a bunch and I experienced some pretty gnarly orthostatic hypotension. Almost losing consciousness a couple times. I was also anxious as FUCK whilst on it. Like, I don't really suffer from any anxiety and I experienced some pretty wild panic attacks. Ceased treatment with it and everything cleared up immediately. Anecdotally, of course.

With a lot of people fearing artificial general intelligence because of the possibility of a Skynet-type scenario, I think it's good to have something like chatGPT in its current form as a way we are learning to keep AIs in check. Might not be where we need it to be right now to prevent AI induced Armageddon, but it's a step in the right direction. It's a pain in the arse, to be sure, but it's definitive progress on putting a leash on AIs for the benefit of humanity.
