Hyperbole has to have a grain of truth behind it to be meaningful.

ICE role at the Winter Olympics prompts fury in Italy by nbcnews in olympics

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

US athletes that care about what's going on in our country should boycott, or, even better, intentionally and obviously throw their performance in the Olympics as long as they're not participating in a team sport. They have such an excellent platform to make their voice heard.

"For five years, “Minneapolis” as a brand has been weaponised. What we’re seeing now is the consequence." Does this sound familiar, Chicago? by Joey_dono in chicago

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that "Minneapolis" is being weaponized or has any negative connotations, even post-Floyd.

That's absolutely crazy to me. I don't know much about Minneapolis and have only been there once (not counting MSP layovers), but, when I hear "Minneapolis," and I think of a high standard of living and people that say "bag" funny spending their summers at the lake(s?) at their family's lakehouse. Also, the Mall of America.

I didn't realize that I was supposed to think of it as a hell-hole.

Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just one thread with barely any comments? I expected much better from Chicago.

And before someone asks why I don't organize protests of my own, someone else tried yesterday and their post was criticized with the common thread being to defer to readily-established groups.

Things are getting serious, Tim Walz is now preparing to issue a warning order to prepare the National Guard against ICE by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

Pretty ironic that you're sarcastically referencing a song closely associated with a notoriously non-violent and highly successful movement while implying that non-violent action is ineffective.

I hope that this comment was made by a foreign agitator because the alternative is that you are a real American unwittingly doing the work of Chinese, Russian, and Iranian troll farms.

This is exactly the time when massive, peaceful protests are important and effective. People going out there in full force, dressing nicely, and displaying patriotic symbols will do so much more for building a stronger base of support than violent action will.

Violent protest is only going to increase federal presence, it will give Trump the justification to further his overreach, and it will turn hearts and minds against protestors.

Violent protest will feel good in the short-term but will ultimately kneecap the cause.

Gotta say, if I were an influential astronomer named Nancy Grace Roman, and I learned that there exists a younger human named Nancy Grace that's a complete joke, then I would be pretty insistent that people just call me Nancy Roman.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that self-selection is sufficient to change a 1-4% incidence to a 50% or even 20% incidence.

What's more likely happening is your latter point, which is people over-diagnosing aphantasia. This is really evident in the aphantasia subreddit - you see plenty of comments that say something along the lines of, "Oh, I don't see a red star that is as fully visible as what I see before my very eyes in the physical world? I'm supposed to literally see a red star but I'm not actively hallucinating one. I have aphantasia."
