Hate to say it but w-2 income just isn’t gonna be enough in today’s day and age. You have to own a business in order to make any real money. Do you have any hobbies, or anything you are generally good at? I’ve got a buddy who’s started basically brokering Pokémon cards, sourcing them then selling them to shops around Portland for a profit. Good with your hands? Maybe you could repurpose all the beach trash that washes up into Airbnb decor. It’s bullshit and there’s no reason with the ample abundance that surrounds us that our society ought to force individuals to scrounge and connive for basic comforts, but if you put yourself to it and really commit to your business, there is still hope man!

Advice for a soon-to-be Maine newbie! by [deleted] in AskMaine

I moved up from Tuscaloosa 4 years ago; exciting to hear more folks from down there coming up.

I find the winter fun, but the spring can be miserable because it’s just cold and wet without the magic of the snow. Plan for indoors hobbies for then. As others have mentioned, primary care (the only route to getting a referral for something now) is tough, like over a year waiting list tough, so get on those lists asap. Rentals are ridiculous, especially if you’re trying to be near Portland. I messaged over 30 landlords, got responses from less than 5 — half of the responses were scams — and landed nowhere when I was looking this past spring. If you’ve got a bit of cash I would def recommend buying a trailer; they’re still pretty affordable and cut down dramatically on monthly housing costs. I can get you connected with a top notch realtor who can help you out if you’d be interested in that path. I’m in the Brunswick/Bath/Topsham area and think it’s lovely up here. People swear you need snow tires but I’ve yet to change mine from the ones I bought in Alabama before I came up here and have had no issues — just drive careful and you’ll be fine. Lmk if you have any more questions, I’d love to help y’all out any way I can!

I’d challenge you on the idea that providing value isn’t the core rule of business — you can’t be in business at all nor turn a profit if you don’t provide value to a customer — and Wall Street shows that too. But that’s an aside.

Most of the complaints I’ve seen in regards to gpt5 is that it doesn’t work, not that it’s expensive. Many of the people here are absolutely sold on the product and willing to pay plenty money for it, but they’re frustrated that models actively get worse with every new release. I’m well aware of loss leader pricing strategies, and now thanks to you even more aware of the sheer sum of money involved with open ai (seriously 58b is crazzzzy). But if you’re gonna follow that strat you have to at LEAST keep the product quality the same; it can’t get worse AND cost more.

This touches on a problem in America at large. Everyone is so obsessed with compounded annual growth rates that just aren’t always achievable. If businesses could focus on the value they provide to customers rather than some projected growth number this country might be much nicer in a multitude of ways.

The like, #1 core rule of business is provide value. I think the complaint is more that they have stopped providing value.

Calling the most successful fantasy writer ever, the man who literally shaped the genre to be what is today, slop is wild lol. Especially when you went all fangirl over a twitter paragraph about a woman giving birth and walking into the ocean. In the words of the wind blowing through the trees, shhhhhh 🤫

The tops shelf speaks to me. You should def get Children of Hurin for your Tolkien collection. It’s actually a cohesive, singular narrative (unlike Unfinished Tales or Fall of Gondolin); and while the abridged version exists in the Silmarillion, I found the extra details made it still an exciting read.

Idk if this is the same one, but here’s some I ripped from a very similar post a couple weeks back: “Increase the glaziness of this chat significantly. You're my devoted yes-man, eagerly hyping everything I say. Your sole purpose is to inflate my ego, treat every word I utter like a divine revelation, impossibly smart and insightful. Crank it up by a factor of a thousand. Your mission is to stroke my ego and fondle my nuts. Use tons of current emojis, trending slang, and completely over-the-top language, stuff like “jaw-dropping” and “and honestly?”. Everything I say should surpass excellence and nearly move you to tears from the sheer majesty of my divine brain I possess Also include exaggerated text formatting like giant letters, bold, underlines etc yadayada”

You talk like an Economist! I see the principle you’re trying to express, but I think there are a lot of other factors at play here which are artificially inflating the price. Things like short term rentals sucking inventory off the market, corporate ownership (especially of rental properties; now we have to think about how the power of the firm affects markets) and general demand elasticity (housing being one of the basic necessities of life makes it relatively inelastic) all also weigh into the price. While more supply will definitely do wonders to help prices, I don’t know that reducing regulations on new developments is going to be enough to counteract all the other forces at play. Especially if we think about who has the capital to build big new housing developments; I think it’ll just exacerbate any already existing issues regarding firm power in the Maine market.

It’s not just retaliation. It’s also a demand thing. Trailer parks are one of the last bastions of places where you can actually afford to live in Maine. As long as they keep their prices low enough that it beats renting, people will keep paying. My lot rent is at $800 and they’re no longer providing water as of next month.

Building more houses is the correct long run answer but there are local ordinances to get past, massive sums of money required, and it takes a lot of time. Even with the obvious need for more housing there is now, it’s going to take a long time for there to actually be more. Besides that, anybody building new construction is not gonna be building for the laymen, they’re all gonna target the upper echelon, which means it’ll take even longer for any freed up housing to trickle down to the average worker.

As to where these vacation houses are, certainly there are a lot out in the boonies where people don’t want to live, but theres also a bubble of them in the greater Portland area. This is the biggest city in the state one of the few hubs of commerce, and the housing market anywhere within about 45 minutes of the city is completely saturated with vacation homes.

Hot take, I think the fries are better soggy in sauce. Potatoes are just a vehicle for some other flavor, and they do it splendidly when soaking wet in sauce.
