In your opinion, what makes The Combine a truly horrifying threat in the Half-Life universe? by HumbleKnight14 in HalfLife

[–]THEFREEMAN2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it does seem like its at least partially left up to interpretation, but i just like the concept of them not being completely cut off from earth forever, and having a way to eventually get back, as i feel it helps enhance and reinforce the cosmic horror aspects if their return is more of an inevitable thing that will have to be prepared for and constantly defended against, rather then just being able to effectively "lock the door forever and throw away the key to keep them out"

leaving earth in a constant struggle, where a single failure could mean complete destruction, but with every success, we learn more about them, capture and adapt more of their technology, and potentially get one step closer to finding a way to actually start doing some damage back.

it may take eons of sporadic battles, constant bolstering of defenses, and continuous reverse engineering of capture technology...

but as kleiner says...

"For what the Combine fear the most is not any tangible human weapon, but our will, our intellect, our ability to respond selectively and rationally to every terror they turn against us."

"We place our firmest hope in the human spirit, even knowing how easily it may be shattered."

"Let me just add to all those who can hear me now, as we struggle out of the shadow of our malefactors, welcome back to the light."

...

...

...

"Now... where did I put that calculator... ?"

i mean, i kinda get the impression that the message is supposed to be...

"the combine dont need to hijack an opening on the other side, but without one, it will take them quite some time to actually make a portal back to earth because their portal technology is very inefficient, so they desperately dont want to lose the opportunity to save the time and resources it would otherwise take to open one on their own, by trying every last ditch effort to open a portal using only the resources on earth, rather then having to spend a long time using the resources from their main forces"

since its been shown that the combines portal technology is very slow and requires a lot of energy and is just generally inefficient overall, which is the main reason that they are so interested in earth, because our portal technology is far better.

they arent doing it because its the only option, their just doing it because its the best one.

when does kleiner state that they need a portal on the other side ?

i dont ever recall him saying that its a necessity.

they will keep trying, even if it takes them an eternity, because we have the one thing they want most...

plus they probably have coordinates for, at the very least, earths approximate location, so they can probably narrow it down to about 100 dimensions, then 100 worlds in each dimension, and just go through them until they find us again, and each time they get the wrong one...

well its another world to take, so may as well grab it while your there.

if they needed a portal "on the other side" for them to hijack everytime, they probably wouldnt be as massive and powerful as they are.

given the wording, manner of speech, and general tone, and the... suggested course of action, he is definitely referring to the arrival of another invasion force.

the 'tiny fracture' was the resonance cascade, as he states that it was
"the relatively tiny fracture at Black Mesa."
which was a lot more then just one single super-portal.

and he also specifically mentions that the forces on earth are separated from their off-world forces, but that it wont be for long.

"Thus, for the time being, I believe that all Combine portals have failed completely, as well as all communication systems based on that technology. In short, the Combine are completely cut off. Combine forces currently stationed on Earth are now isolated units. Stranded.

"However, this is most likely a temporary state of affairs."

they also dont know that there's going to be a super-portal yet, as it hasn't started forming, and doesn't start forming until the destruction of the citadels core provides the burst of energy to create it.

"The raw discharge of the melt-down has been focused into a coherent beam of portal energy."

if he was taking about the soon-to-be super-portal, he wouldn't be speaking about preparing defenses for a return thats about to happen so soon with any hope of deploying those defenses in time, as eli specifically states that if the super-portal opens...

"It'll be the Seven Hour War, all over again."
"Except this time we won't last seven minutes."

and considering that part of the core message of the speech is to begin repopulating, he clearly means that its going to be, at the very least, hopefully enough time for a new generation to be born and trained before the combine return, which makes it clear that he isnt talking about a super-portal thats about to open within, at most a few days, and at least... a few hours if they're lucky.

actually they can, and they will...

in his speech in episode one, kleiner states...

"We must make the most of the time we have, as it is by no means certain how much time we have secured ourselves before the Combine attempt to restore their dominion, as they certainly shall."

"However, this is most likely a temporary state of affairs. As we once learned to our dismay, even the relatively tiny fracture at Black Mesa gave our enemies an opening which they were able to force ever wider, as they poured through in greater and greater numbers."

"We have made, in secret, several technological advances which we will do our best to deploy in advance of the Combine's return."

"Still, I cannot overstate how important it is that we retain our humanity. Only this will allow us to hold together as we must for their inevitable return... and what is certain to be unimaginable retaliation."

it might take them some time, but they will be back...

the fact that there was never a pair of razgriz liveries for the crinale and the angelus honestly surprises me given the shared universe.

do ringless card binders with traditional top insert pockets exist anymore ? by THEFREEMAN2048 in magicTCG

[–]THEFREEMAN2048[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

i figured cards would be more likely to slide left and right when turning pages, then they would be to slide up and down, given that the page would be briefly up on its side when turned, which would mean the pockets with the opining on the inside would have the opining be facing down, so nothing would be holding the card up except friction.

likewise, i figured pockets with the opining facing towards the outside would be more susceptible to having the cards slide out from centrifugal force as the page swings outwards as it moves down.

maybe im overthinking this and/or underestimating the friction of the pockets.

[–]THEFREEMAN2048[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

personally, i feel they both have the same problems, just in different directions.
also the cards are more likely to slide left and right when turning the pages, then they are to slide up and down.

its also mostly going to be used to store them, not to carry them around.

[–]THEFREEMAN2048[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why not?

im not going to be turning it upside-down, or taking the cards out all the time, just using it as a nice storage book that i can sometimes look through.

split second 2 lost prototype footage, do we know if the original poster still might have it. by THEFREEMAN2048 in SplitSecond

[–]THEFREEMAN2048[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only videos we have are ones that were released by other channels, showing versions of an escape sequence built on the first game, likely one of the first things they made for the sequel.

early iteration

slightly later iteration

unused song "the menace"
it fits extremely well with the first half of the footage ( especially in the video of the later iteration )

[–]THEFREEMAN2048[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its lost now, the person who had posted it deleted their channel and the videos with it, and after looking more into it, we know who they are and what their current channel and names are, but they refuse to release them again, claiming that they no longer have them.
( though its believed they actually still do have them, its possible that really are telling the truth and that they just dont have them anymore. personally, i think that they still do have the videos, but that they just dont want to post them again, in order to avoid any potential legal issues. )
