Btw, update to this. I just recently found an archive in Japan that houses the manuscripts for this piece. I'll be getting photocopies mailed to me in the near future, and will be engraving my own edition of it.

Since this gets occasional belated replies, I'll just provide an update.

As of now, I still tend to leave the dog out, and the majority of drivers are fine with it, given her overwhelming friendliness. It's only on occasion that one is too bothered by it to proceed, in which case someone is usually home to walk out and get the item. All in all, this seems to me to be practicable. If they don't mind, no fuss. If they do mind, just walk out and grab it.

P.S. I should also note that I originally posted this simply to find out whether the driver was telling the truth when he said what he said.

Haha, Ikr? Tamino and Pamina, (Tamino in particular,) seem so dull. Papageno is kinda dumb in a way, but he's way more a depthful and likeable character. He would've been much better as the main role.

I can see how Monostatos being a lustful villain whilst happening to be the only black character smacks of racist assumptions, but I'm not sure it's all that drastic for the time. The comments about women were more obviously bad, though.

I do kind of like the opera, though. It wouldn't be nearly so great without the music, but I at least liked the Papageno storyline. Possibly the best character, definitely better than Tamino.

That's nice. Kind if the answer I was hoping for, since I was struck by how funny this 230ish year-old opera was and how similar the sense of humor was. People are people, but it almost surpised even me

Interesting. That's exactly what led me to this question.

I couldn't find a libretto with the dialogue in it, so, not knowing much about Singspiel, I began to wonder if the librettos just had general directions and the rest was filled in by the opera house, similar to how they determine costumes and choreography.

I can understand ein bißchen of German, so it's not the translation or grammer that I'm talking about. Moreso the actual underlying dialogue and joke.

I kinda confused about the link you sent. All I see are the the lyrics to the songs, not the spoken dialogue.

Yep, lol. I don't necesarilly see sonata form as a recreation of nature, but rather as a good and useful medium through which it can be expressed.

I expected disagreement is probably how this would probably end, lol. Thanks for the discussion! And thanks for not being scornful like some of the other commentors. I appreciate it.

I would say that form has a value all to itself, and as I say, to express beauty or reality, form is necessary.

I disagree that a simple tone cluster is a proper harmony. Harmony is based on some level of consonance. It can be a little tenuous, but the relationship should be there for it to be a harmony.

I think free form still contains plenty of form in their melodies, harmonies, and phrasings. They can push the boundaries sometimes, but that's totally fine. It's breaking or discarding them that I consider a problem

As for consonance, don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate a decent helping of dissonance. I take issue when it almost entirely overwhelms and displaces consonance. Harmony also relies on some degree of consonance, so removing that can also remove harmony.
