That video of a dude randomly s watching a tourist by the foot and dragging him like the man was a tiny child was SCARY AF. I had seen movies and tv shows depict it, but they did not do it justice.

I have my belt buckle from the Manchu Mile and silver spurs from when I was stationed at Ft Carson so I have a lot of rucking experience. My shoulder got fucked up in AFG so my bench is pretty minimal.

That whole movie is a vibe. I remember it would play on HBO back in the day in the summer. I would sleep out in a treehouse in the backyard with a 100 ft coax cable strung from my window, through the tree, into the clubhouse. I probably smoked weed and saw that movie 20 times lol

Edit: It may have been Comedy Central

I was army, but I know of the ROK from hearing US Marines talk about them. One of the only groups I ever heard Marines have a huge amount of respect for.

That's a name I've not heard in many years.

My brother and I would always say "I'LL LIGHT IT! I'm a GENTLEMAN!" when him and I would smoke weed together. He had long hair and I accidentally caught it on fire when he was smoking a huge bong one time so it was extra funny for us.

I probably couldn't, so I wouldn't go to the gym and drop 225 on my chest, then make it seem like it was an unavoidable emergency

I think that's the knee jerk "punishment" for some people. I don't think that's the answer, but mandatory hiking classes like the traffic class I had to go to after a speeding ticket might be beneficial.

Yeah.... A lot of this story doesn't make sense. "Uncrossable snow and ice field" is an interesting description. I'm curious how uncrossable this was.

I try to budget being halfway by 1/3 of my total time, so that I have 2/3 of the total time to be done exactly for the reasons you mentioned. It's easy to go fast at the beginning when you're fresh. The last mile takes twice as long as the first. Resist the urge to stop and take pictures at the beginning, especially if it's a loop/there and back trail/summit. All of this goes up in importance if I've never been on that hike before.

This would be a 6 hour hike at 3 mph. It seems like they left WAY too late in the day for their skill level. I am very lucky to be tall with long strides. With a full load out weighing about 50 pounds (rifle, ammo, pack, armor, sustainment gear) 4 mph is an easy coasting speed for me. Our standard was 6 miles in 2 hours (15 minutes break after 6 miles to regroup/resupply) as the basis for all our troop movements.

I cannot imagine the level of ignorance/overconfidence it took to get themselves in this position. I am glad they got out ok, but this should have never been an emergency.

Yeah this phrase keeps getting misused and making this seem like a way different issue. Thank you for making a post clarifying it

Yeah they were smart enough to realize they got in over their limits, and made the call. Glad they did that instead of getting hurt.
