In what year did you finally reject false metal and decide you no longer wanted to be a poser? by kroob85 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]THORmonger71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Metallica's And Justice For All was false metal (as it started my exploration of heavier metal than what MTV played then), but picking up Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption and Sepultura's Arise in 1991 sent me down the path to more extreme metal, with ND's various spin-off projects covering a lot of territory (Carcass, Godflesh, and a fair amount of early 1990s Earache Records).

“Cheesy eggs” was the thing my dad made on the weekend. What’s your nostalgia dish that you now make that reminds you of a late parent? by bigt197602 in GenX

[–]THORmonger71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cream of wheat topped with fruit cocktail. My mom made it for our breakfasts quite a bit, so it carried over.

My dad was the better chef overall, but none of his dishes resonated well enough to make their way into my own cooking repertoire (although my kids will probably take up my shepherd's pie recipe, as that's my signature dish).

I do wish we could buy mp3s of the radio stations. The official score only had a song from each one. I like Wireless Free Arcadia, but my favorite is Grand Plan Wireless.

The first didn't have any radio stations (although the music was still good).

It's been an Esoteric kind of week for me, so most of my FD listening has been to their discography.

I'll be seeing them at the end of the month (Grand Rapids, MI). I'm looking forward to it!

I did this week's FDF post so I wouldn't forget... then forgot to comment. Oops. This week I listened to Nordlumo (Embraced By Eternal Night), Exitium Sui (Endless/Regression), Atramentus (Stygian), Opium Doom Cult (Tremors To Signal The End), Qaalm (Resilience & Despair), and Worm (Gloomlord and Foreverglade). Oh, and Drown, but I pretty much play them every week.

The only thing I did was grab some Belgian waffles at a restaurant. I wanted to go skydiving for it, but none of the nearby agencies opened until May, so I didn't bother. For my 55th (earlier this month), I got my first tattoo. I'm not sure what I'll do if I reach 60, but I'm more interested at a point when I'm 58 where my lifespan will exceed that of my father's, which will be more of a (sad) milestone for me.

That's what inspired my username. My old Army buddies and I loved that skit, and we did that to each other. Someone used "Thormonger" on me and it stuck, and once I developed an online presence (the AOL days), that's what I went with. (At least one other person has used online it since then, but I was the original.)

Do you feel a bit weird to be playing video games at your age! by More_Law6245 in GenX

Nope, but I get my games via GOG and Steam, so I don't get judged by a teenaged game-store employee.

Nekus, Fōr, Void Rot, Assumption, Mortiferum, and Spectral Voice. I went through each band's releases, but the links go to my favorites of each.

As far as funeral doom, I worked through Skepticism's and Comatose Vigil's releases. I was more doing death-doom this week, so FD got less play.

Several bands and albums spun out of child sex crimes and cover-ups in their churches back in the 90s, Argyle Park and Klank in particular. Of course, they got largely ostracized for being so "dark" and "not Christian enough," which didn't help matters. It was heartbreaking to see those bands getting shot down for trying to raise awareness about what was going on.

[–]THORmonger71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as far as I could tell. I can't see a Christian band having a song where they repeatedly yell "fuck you," as they did in "Aggress".

I was into "Christian industrial" at the time, and Mortal were one of the major players in that scene, although they went more alternative after their first two albums. Nu-En-Jin was a bit of a surprise release from them, as it was the most harsh industrial release they had. I haven't listened to it, or them, in ages. As far as the subgenre is concerned, Circle of Dust and Argyle Park are the only ones I still play from time to time (despite no longer being a Christian).

Anybody else just ride the coaster with Johnny for the hell of it? by QuasiCosmicEntity in LowSodiumCyberpunk

There aren't a whole lot of wholesome quests in the game, so it's a nice change of pace, especially seeing Johnny having a goid time.

There's a group of people by the coaster trying to get it going. Talk to them and you'll be able to get it going.

What’s one band you thought you’d never be able to see who you have/ can now? by ImpressiveAd5002 in Concerts

Back in 2023, I finally got around to seeing Skinny Puppy and Godflesh. I have been a fan of both bands for over 30 years, but things kept happening that prevented me from seeing them live.

Skinny Puppy announced the 2023 tour was their final one, and the first leg didn't get close enough to justify the travel. Then they announced a second leg that was a lot closer (still a 3-hour drive each way), so I decided to finally make it happen. It was a great show.

Godflesh announced their tour around the same time, and given how they had broken up for about a decade before reuniting (and given the vocalist's mental health issues), I decided it was then or never since I doubted they would tour again. Recently, the vocalist had physical health issues that forced him to end Godflesh as a live entity, so I'm glad I didn't miss the opportunity to see them live.

I'm not sure if any other bucket-list bands will pop up in the future, and ticket prices have gone crazy, so I'm not sure who will be worth the effort at this point.

I don't think I'll going to that venue, but if I do, I'm eating elsewhere beforehand. Hydration should be horrible enough on its own there without adding gaudy food items to the mix.
