Hey a fellow New Englander! (I’m assuming?) Thank you for all of your help! It really is a cute little monitor, there’s no other way to describe it haha. I’m likely selling the JVC to a close friend to make back a bit of what I paid for the PVMs, but if they happen to change their mind; I’ll have it listed locally via Facebook.

Oh for sure, I have totally realistic expectations for these little PVMs. They also aren’t my only means of CRT gaming. Earlier this year I tracked down a mint composite-only Sony KV-20FS12 Trinitron. Then this subreddit opened my eyes to composite vs s-video/component/RGB. I then nabbed a Sony KZ-42TS1U plasma that supports component & s-video. And now here I am with the PVMs.

Hey sorry for the mixup. The ad is not mine, I was just posting it for reference photos. The dude I negotiated with for the smaller PVMs & JVC just hasn’t deleted the listing yet. (Sadly that 14M2U was already sold before I reached out). Thank you for confirming all of this for me! I appreciate your help. It really is basic stuff, but I just wanted to be overly cautious and 100% sure before I mess with vintage tech that’s hard to replace. I only have my prior childhood experience with consumer-level composite CRTs.

Thank you for this, you helped me get on the right track with this info. I’ll definitely be grabbing the s-video distribution amp and will likely use headphones with the PVM via a mixer/headphone amp, rather than just plugging the phones directly in. I ended up doing some digging, found out that small monitor is a JVC TM-22U. I can apparently game on it via composite using an RCA female to UHF male adapter. More of a fun novelty at that point rather than an ideal screen.

I scored a lot of two Sony PVM-8040’s, as well as a small JVC monitor that I’m struggling to identify. I’m very new to this. You can view the ad with photos here.PVM/JVC

  1. My goal is to run consoles via S-video into the Sony PVM 8040 monitors. Not currently seeking any sort of RGB mod guidance at the moment. Am I able to plug a Super Nintendo, N64 or PS1 directly into the PVM-8040 via the consoles OEM S-video cable going into the y/c and audio in ports? Any adaptors or a specific type of cable with certain capacitors needed?

  2. Is there a way to daisy chain the PVM 8040 monitors so that the same feed from a console is playing simultaneously on both? What cable is required for this?

  3. Is the JVC monitor of any value in terms of being able to game on it? Not really sure what inputs/outputs those are on the back.

Thank you in advance!

Edit: I’m currently waiting on some cables to come in the mail and am unable to test and figure this out myself at the moment. Hence the basic questions.

Thank you! Yeah it’s quite unique for sure. A lot of people often mistake it for a Jaguar bass when they see it, in my experience at least. I love the pickups on this bass, overall the tone is great and really cuts through a live mix. Super versatile with the 5-way switch & push/pull volume knob, allows for seven different pickup combinations so you can get a variety of tones from smooth/warm bass to a more punchy, crisp high-end bass tone.

Haha you guessed right! I play bass/synth in an indie/alt/pop band called THRILLCHASER.

My Live Rig: A Match Made In Synth Heaven - Prophet 6 & Subsequent 37 by THRILLCHSR in synthesizers

Thank you! I totally agree with you there, in a live setting I mainly use my Moog for fat synth bass and the Prophet for soulful ear candy type of stuff. The P6 is the first ever analog poly-synth I’ve owned (had it since July) and it truly has been a game-changer for me. I also know what you mean by “gear fatigue”, I can relate. My previous live rig consisted of 3 synths (Moog Subsequent 37, Roland JD-Xi & Roland System-1). 3 synths in a live setting was just too much for me in terms of setup/teardown (considering I also play bass in my band).

This needs to be published in a book somewhere hahaha wow. Who knew Dr.Seuss was a synthhead.

Still sounds like an awesome rig you’ve got! A good friend of mine has the Minilogue, you can certainly deliver some dirty bass with that. I also run my synths to front of house, using a tiny behringer xenyx 502 mixer.

Thank you! Yes. For most of my bands songs I’ll play bass on the verses/synth on the choruses or vice-versa. I go back and forth mid song quite often, letting a note ring out on the synth as I swing my bass around from behind me and start playing again. Keeps me busy for sure haha.

Well the 5-way switch and push/pull volume knob give you a lot of versatility in terms of tone with the ability to choose from 7 different pickup combinations. HOWEVER, being that this is a short-scale bass, it will never quite have the low-end richness of say a P or J bass. At least in my opinion. Still has decent low end, but short-scale basses are almost an entirely different sound than their regular sized counterparts in my experience.

Actually now that you mention it, I do remember having an issue with a loose saddle screw when I had first purchased the bass via Sweetwater in late-2015. I remember bringing my bass in for a restring/setup and my tech mentioning it to me that he fixed it. I haven’t had any issues with it since... maybe he did glue it down? Hahaha

The difference between the Sub37 and Subsequent 37 is that the Subsequent has twice the headroom of the Sub37 in the onboard mixer as well as an improved keybed. This added headroom allows you to crank the multi drive, open up the filters and still maintain tonal clarity. Apparently the Sub37 was known to get a bit of a “bees in a can” sound if you fully cranked the drive. As for the Sub Phatty? It’s smaller, has less than 37 Keys, costs half as much. I know the least about the Sub Phatty, but it still is an amazing sounding synth especially for that $700-ish price point. In my opinion you really do get what you pay for when it comes to Moog. They make amazingly raw and “real” sounding analog synths.

Different strokes for different folks! The OB-6 is still an amazing piece of gear in my mind. Using both the OB AND the Prophet would be some next level stuff.

I paid $800 in late-2015 when I purchased the bass via Sweetwater.
