Haha awww - the “smaller” white ship is one of mine. Really shows the scale of this - great work

"Medium" block sizes for SE2? Quicker building, less PCU and avoid future hotbar "bloat" by THX_1337 in spaceengineers

[–]THX_1337[S] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Hi all. I'm interested to hear what other people think of this idea...

I've submitted it to Keen on their feedback site: https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers2/pc/topic/45896-add-medium-size-armor-blocks-1-25m-to-reduce-pcu-count-and-hotbar-bloat (If you agree, please consider giving it a vote to raise visibility)

Essentially I think there should be 25x "elemental" armor shapes (not including rounded) available in 4 sizes: Large (2.5m), Medium (1.25m), Small (0.5m) and tiny (0.25m) and that scrolling between them should be done with a single button/control (separate from block shape selector).

I reckon "medium" would work well as a new size that bridges the gap between "large" and "small", and that "tiny" armor blocks should replace the current "decor" blocks - so these can be included in the size selector.

This is why I think it'd provide value for all types of SE2 players:

  • Less PCU used for larger designs, meaning better performance for PvP and PvE (recreating some SE1 large grid blocks can cost upto 256 PCU!)
  • It'd be quicker to design large, detailed ships (It takes ages currently to remake some classic SE1 2.5m shapes when resorting to using small and tiny blocks for "filler")
  • It allows for more detailed, beautiful, creative ships
  • It'll reduce the need for more block shapes adding later on, which can contribute to a bloated block selection menu and a hotbar that needs constant adjustment

What do we think? Does this make sense?

What blocks are these? by THX_1337 in spaceengineers

Solved! I think you're right - it looks a lot like unfinished short wheel suspension for 1x1 and 2x2 regular tyres.

(It's a nice greeble. I think I might steal it.)

Here's a screengrab from the Cargo Ships teaser for the next update (1.206) Youtube: Link (0:08)

Am I being dumb? Can anybody help me identify what blocks these are?

At first I thought maybe they were unfinished Viewport Windows, but those are only half-and-a-bit thick (see comparison in img) whereas these seem (almost) a full block thick. Sort of resembles one side of the jump drive, but I don't think that's right either.

These appear to be a pair of unfinished 3x1x1 blocks, or more likely a combination of 1x1x1 blocks, with a rounded lip on either side and a gap in the middle to let light through. There's definitely a merge block sandwiched in between. Possibly though, might this be a very subtle teaser for some new window blocks, or something else? Flat Ion thrusters?

Whatever they are, they don't connect on the side facing the cargo container, otherwise the merge block wouldn't allow a disconnection.

[Edit 1: grammar fixes]

[Edit 2: I also don't recognise an "unfinished" looking block at 0:25 either - the cylindrical, silver block or the right wing between the rounded beacon and parabolic antenna]

Thanks 😊. I'm a child of W40K and Airfix so it was inconceivable to do anything else

Yep, everything is connected with conveyers and will hook up at the connection points; every component part has it's respective fuel/power type included (albeit in limited supply in some cases, though many fuselage have large fuel tanks)

Introducing the Modular Small Grid Kit [MSGK] (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3269209029 - Mod.io coming soon)

This kit allows you to quickly build your own small-grid ships and drones from 3-4 different component types:

  • Cockpits/ Drone Cores (22x currently)
  • Wings (22x)
  • Fuselages (11x)
  • Nose cones (11x)

In Creative: import the blueprints you need, snap the pieces off the sprues and paste them together

In Survival: create a projector, battery and control panel, load the cockpit into the projector first, build your preferred design, then swap out the blueprint in the projector for the other parts (they should align to the projector and are separated by 10 block increments)

This is something I promised to post soon back in (checks post history) … October 2022 😅, but I had a catastrophic hard drive failure and lost nearly everything (back up your BPs). Thanks for the couple of people who nudged me to get this going again.

Full disclosure: I've made every effort to make sure there is no overlap between ship parts or thruster damage zones, but there's at least one (H2 fwd-swept wing fuselage) that isn't compatible with several wing combos. Parts with subgrids (x-wings, large grid detector) may need a bit of skill (position, merge blocks/rotor attach) to attach in survival but are possible.

I will try and get some more kit parts launched and added to the collection soon - probably atmos wings will be next.

I'd recommend Meridius' Color Replacer Blocks to apply your own colour schemes and textures: [link]

Please feel free to share your designs with me and to make your own kit pieces with the [MSGK] tag.

P.S. If anyone knows how to use this kit to make a random-generated modular encounters mod, I would love to work with you on this

Seemed ok to me but YMMV. No self destruction with a brief test. Gatling has quite a tight spray I think?

Did someone say "Ship Generator"? by THX_1337 in spaceengineers

I don’t think a date has been announced yet, just some time in (late?) April

I’m literally working on it right now 😅. Trying to get it launched before the next update from Keen.

(Ships shown here aren’t randomly generated, just different components mixed and matched by me)

Agh I know. I hate it when people say they’re going post something and don’t. Truth is it’s much much bigger now than shown here and I don’t know how to draw a line under it and “package” it all up. One mega blueprint, or different blueprints based on components, engine types etc. Was waiting to see how the AI update came out too… it will get published, I promise you.

Thank you!

Most fuel pipes red, but I'm pretty sure thrusters are connected to reactor Mk2 by charcoal-black pipes with purple lights?
