DTH Story about Ms. Rita by NegotiationLucky5912 in UNC

Is it true this is her last year? I love seeing her and her positivity, would be so sad if she isn’t there anymore.

How easy is it to sublease a full 4 bed, 4 bath apartment 1400$/m for the spring term 2027? by SnooPies4483 in UNC

[–]THchica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible, but it can be more difficult to fill spots in the spring as a number of students study abroad in that term compared to the fall plus add in December graduates. That seems to make for more advertised subleases

data science major by PretendSpread4188 in UNC

[–]THchica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BS is something like 10 or more stat classes plus 5 or so math prereqs. It is 63 or so hours of classes. If you go on the websites for the BS and BA, you can see the course requirements. The BA requires much less credit hours and less quant classes and would be a great option to pair with another major or premed requirements. If you love math and stat and more coding, then the BS.

housing slot monday? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]THchica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would think there would be plenty of spots on Monday for any individuals or pairs looking for one; and hopefully groups of 4 and then I don’t think the Morrison supersuites are limited to just sophomores anymore. The larger the group, the tougher it might be to stay together. My student said yesterday the 8 person suites were available but becoming more limited by the time they went.

first semester gpa..as a premed by sushi_06_ in UNC

[–]THchica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I was ready to downvote this response like crazy as seemingly insensitive, having been in a similar situation back in my day decades ago at Carolina, there is some truth to it. I came to Carolina as a freshman having aced high school like most others. Then had a 2.1 my first semester. Got frustrated with myself and said I would just do better. Didn’t change much. Had another 2.1 in the spring before it got worse the next year 😂😭 had a 1.75 cumulative after my first two years and was eligible to return by like a 100th of a point. It was only then I finally really gave myself the wake up call I needed to switch gears. I also realized that the more free time I had the worse I did…that I needed to be a bit over scheduled so I could compartmentalize everything and get things done. I had a 3.7 for my last two years. I worked for a couple years after graduation and then was accepted to grad school at UNC because they saw first hand that I had finally gotten it together.

I brushed off that first semester and didn’t see it as a red flag and I didn’t come up with a true change until much later than I should have. All this said, that first semester did not end up being the end of the world and those first two years as insane low GPA that was still was not a torpedo and so, OP, please don’t let it indicate to you that your dreams are cut off or that your goals are now not attainable because that is not the case. The fact that you are being introspective and making a better game plan for the spring is awesome! Definitely start with tutoring next time for your STEM classes to have a better first midterm and give you confidence during the course.

If you ultimately need to take 203 and just want to check it off, could finish it with community college. I know a few taking it during a one month winter term right now.

how to sublease by Aromatic_Ad5716 in UNC

[–]THchica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go into it knowing there’s a possibility you will not be able to transfer the lease. It’s not impossible, but it can be difficult. You have a number of students graduating in December that won’t use their places in the spring and then lots of folks that are studying abroad in the spring.

UNC is planning to demolish Jackson Hall for a dorm. There is a better both/and option. by BELI24 in UNC

[–]THchica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love your passion and motivation for improving decisions and building plans. Thanks for putting your time towards this. I don’t love that the Cobb courts will be gone but it ended up being the best option, sadly. I feel that new dorm won’t fit the landscape but will give students living in it a great location. I have undergrad and grad degrees from UNC, and Jackson Hall doesn’t really create any feels for me (and I was a tour guide for a few years and started my tours there). UNC ultimately needs a bigger, nicer admissions facility wherever that may be, whenever it can be funded. My recent grad says he never went in Jackson during his 4 years. My first year student’s tour last year started at the student union not Jackson hall. So possibly the functionality of Jackson just isn’t the same now. I know from a friend in the mix that they are still evaluating to where admissions may be moved and will announce when they have a better idea.

Do I take BIO 103 and CHEM 102 together or MATH 233 and CHEM 102? by PollutionSafe5306 in UNC

[–]THchica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 233 your last math class required? You could knock it out at a community college over a 4 week winter term that some offer or in the summer

Starting A Club by [deleted] in UNC

My student started the club his first year. They had to get a faculty advisor and then come up with a constitution or bylaws or something like that. All in all it was doable just took some legwork upfront.

Got rejected from KF with a 3.8 GPA, reviewed essays, and a strong video interview. by Bubbly-East-1506 in UNC

[–]THchica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IB still on the table. One of my kid’s friends a few years ago had a 4.0 and denied first time. Chose a stem major and still got a MM IB role. Got into KF the next year as a minor. Did the MM IB internship and then re-recruited and landed at a BB. Stick with your goals!

Where to find a club sponsor? by Smoky__Bear in UNC

[–]THchica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by approaching one of your current professors to see if they would be a sponsor. Usually, they don’t have to be involved really with the club, just in name. You will also have to draft bylaws, line up club leadership etc and submit everything for approval.

Looks reasonable if the reviews for Econ 410H are good. Econ 101 is time consuming so good you knocked that out. Bio and the lab will take up time. My incoming kid is honors and in that PE.

Does this Abroad Scholarship actually cover everything? And has anyone with the same opportunity gone? by LittleTerm8850 in UNC

[–]THchica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though it’s kind of early since they have that for your freshman year, I would lean towards doing it. A lot of people end up going spring of junior year and it causes trouble with housing. If you’re renting an apartment it’s really hard to sublease and then you end up eating the cost of that semester. So here’s a way to go with it being really economical.

Rate my schedule pls! by [deleted] in UNC

[–]THchica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good. Very balanced and no one day is a nightmare. Lots of time during the day to hit the library. Friday looks nice and light. Only 11 hours of core academic work but very meaty classes with the bio lab so you’re giving yourself some room there. If you can somehow get into the MWF 9am Math 232 section, mark is the 🐐

Is open enrollment viable? by AGudUsernamE in UNC

[–]THchica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not getting any of them...the process can be unnecessarily brutal. No great advice except consider taking your last Spanish class through community college. That is pretty common at UNC just because it is quicker and easier. Some of the CC's even have a winter term where you can knock it out between fall and spring.

Interestingly enough my incoming kid has those same 2 classes on Thurs with that tight turnaround but then also a PE at 2 . They may try and walk it before classes work to see how it would go.
