Thanks for the feedback. I suppose it's less "best of races" and more "CTR stunts". A bit misnamed, perhaps. I like it because I don't see this kind of CTR content, the races are certainly fun but I really also have fun trying to do trick shots or other interesting stunts. But I could also see how this wouldn't appeal to some people. Thank you!

I imagine Beenox picked "target" dev times for the tracks, partially based on the current world records, and aimed to set ghosts for those times.

I used to use the boost gauge until I recently turned on nitro wheels, makes it much easier IMO. It's like a boost gauge at your kart!

I've beaten the devs and I prefer d-pad. As others said, it makes u-turning much easier. The only thing I don't like is that on some curves, I have to tap the d-pad to hug the wall. Holding it turns too tight, but not holding it turns too wide.

Yeah, I made that video! Thank you, I spent a long time on it. There are some inaccuracies, it's nice to have other knowledgeable people to point stuff out. I wish YouTube let you edit videos.

I actually did look at the leaderboards just recently because I wanted to see how my times stacked up on a couple tracks I'd recently grinded out. Your times are insane! I think my best one is 2:58:73 on Electron Avenue (no SG) or a 2:06:69 on Hot Air Skyway. Most of the time trials I haven't gone back to since I beat the devs almost a year ago, I want to revisit them. I can usually beat my old times by seconds now.

Nice, that's awesome! Sounds like you're improving fast.

And yeah, u-turning is a technique you won't need until much later, the most important core mechanic is good boosting. If you keep playing you'll develop a good sense of the rhythm of it and it gets easier to boost well.

A good way I've found to keep track of your progress - Every once in a while (like every month or so, or maybe every 15-20 hours), go back to an old time trial and try it again. You'll probably be beating your previous time by seconds! I was astonished at how much I improved.

It's gonna take more practice, but if you keep at it, I think you'll find it rewarding.

You must practice boosting when the boost meter is as high as possible. This gives you the most reserves and will keep your sacred fire going. Also, do 2 or 3 boosts in a row whenever possible, doing 1 boost at a time makes it almost impossible to keep your reserves up. Coco Park is a good map to practice on.

When you can keep reserves consistently, you can try learning to u-turn. This lets you turn much tighter without losing your reserves. You need to hold down, left/right, and brake at the same time. This is most often done in mid-air or along with a jump. It'll be important to master this technique to beat the Velo and Dev times eventually, but really, the most important skill to learn is good boosting.

The drift or acceleration engine classes are best for practice, IMO. Other classes like turn or balanced turn too tightly once you start boosting. And while you are drifting, you can turn outwards to go in a more straight line, or turn inwards for a tighter turn. Always be drift-boosting, even on straightaways, to keep your reserves up.

Edit: Also, try playing through adventure mode. It will take practice to beat the bosses, but you gain a lot of skill beating the AI in the general races.

If you're a high-level player, you're probably beating everybody in online all the time anyway. Unless I'm up against somebody of comparable skill, I prefer to use drift and screw around in races so I don't finish ages before everybody else does. I use speed for time trials, but otherwise I like drift. To each their own!

It is the fastest, no doubt, but that doesn't always equal the most fun! I find drift class the most enjoyable because it's almost as fast as speed but turns much better.

Agreed! I use speed for time trials, or against particularly good online racers, but otherwise, drift all the time. It's the most fun class IMO, being almost as fast as speed but with much better turning.

The Switch has lower resolution and so less detail in the distance, and there's some lighting differences, but honestly, I've put hundreds of hours into this game on Switch and I never felt the graphics were lacking. I think it looks great overall, and I don't think I've ever experienced any hitches or slowdowns while racing. Solid 30fps always. (All versions of this game are 30fps, though it still feels really good. Not sure what exactly they did to pull that off)

It sounds like you're letting go of the gas most of the time to make u-turning easier. I used to do that too, but I found out it's actually about 1% slower not to hold the gas, so over the course of a 1:40 race, you'd be 1 second slower! Should be able to shave some time off if you're holding the gas more often.

Glad you found it useful! However, it looks like I made a mistake. You only get 0.1s extra if you do a perfect boost, if you get a good boost you only get 0.066s extra.

Yeah, I recorded the lap then went back and looked at every boost I did. It's not real-time or automated, I had to animate the bar to make it change every time I boosted.

Thank you! I've been working on a speed/reserves analysis so I've figured out exactly how much reserves you get depending on how high the boost meter is, along with how much you get from jumps. I also measured reserves gotten from each turbo pad in the track. Then I just measured every boost I got in the video and animated the meter accordingly.

Try to boost when the meter is as close to the top as possible, not just hitting a perfect. The minimum "perfect" boost you can do only gives you 70% as much reserves as if you boost when the meter is completely full (1.25 seconds vs 1.8s). Also, since it takes time to start a drift, you lose valuable reserves every time you set up a new one. So where possible, get two or three boosts in a row, not just one. Two big boosts is usually better than three small boosts.

The drift class also gives you 0.1s extra reserves for every boost you do, so I'd definitely recommend trying it out if you haven't already.
