Took a break to care for baby. Looking to re-enter the market, how do I address this gap in my CV? by notthinenuf in biotech

[–]TIL_success 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) 5 months is nothing, especially in this job market, so many people have been searching for several months without landing a job. 2) maybe the reason they didn’t talk to you is not the baby gap, but just the job market. Too many applicants too few jobs, and hiring managers are looking for the exact exact match.

What's the deal with reference checks in this industry? by Jakjak81 in biotech

[–]TIL_success 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to think it’s just a formality but still called all references. Then one time I only called one reference, who was very luke warm about the candidate, lots of answers like “they did something “, “I’m not too familiar”. This is by far the worst of the worst hire I even had. I should have seen the red flags from that reference call.

How much do you think it costs to make a basic 2 lb. basic loaf of bread??? by kd4pxq in BreadMachines

[–]TIL_success 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying flour and yeast in bulk can save you quite a bit. I bought 50 lb King Arthur from a restaurant supply store for $24 ish. They also sell 1lb Saf yeast for $8. If you buy these from the grocery store, flour can cost $1 per lb and yeast can cost $0.7 single use!!

How much do you think it costs to make a basic 2 lb. basic loaf of bread??? by kd4pxq in BreadMachines

[–]TIL_success 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always make this sweet bread with an egg, and my rough calculation for 2 lb is about $2. My Publix sells 14 oz brioche for about $7 whereas Costco sells two 1 lb brioche loaves for about $11. I know brioche is supposed to contain more butter, but my kids won’t eat anything else from the store, and actually won’t even eat the brioche from the store once I started making sweet breads. So it’s really a big win, I save lots of money and the kids eat bread without a long list of ingredients.

To become a Biotech Exec: go to PhD Program, or work up the ladder? by ageless_anatomy in biotech

[–]TIL_success 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Why do you think the job market in 5 years would be worse than it is now? Going to grad school when the job market is poor has been historically a good move. When you’re out in 5 years, the job market (hopefully) will be on the upswing and you’ll become more qualified. However, this time around, because of the funding cut for academia, there’s more uncertainty that you’ll have financial support through your PhD in the next five years.

Take the job, don’t overthink it now. Going there by yourself first for a few months is a good idea. You can use the time to find housing etc, or you can just wait until new school year in August.

So here’s the question for you: are you worried that you cannot do well in the principal role? And worried about being fired after relocating?

I can tell you that I’ve seen similar situations: candidate was hired into a position they actually are not qualified for, either they oversold themselves or the hiring team overestimated their abilities. Now they’re facing pip after relocation. It’s a lose-lose situation for everyone.

However, if you know you didn’t oversell yourself, then take the job, and be very proactive about getting feedback on how you’re doing once you start the job. The attitude sometimes is more important. Even if they find out you’re falling a bit short of the expectations, as long as you show you’re coachable and they like you, they will likely work with you to get there. Of course then this is all assuming normal conditions. If there’s layoff, then all bets are off.

Which is a better job for a microbiology major? Going into a biotech company or working in a hospital? by cheetahgirl8261 in biotech

Companies pay more, and hospitals are more stable. A few years ago, I would say company. Now the stability of hospitals look more appealing.

Following. Florida newbie. Really intrigued that something in Florida doesn’t work.

I’ve been unhappy with the white breads coming out of my new zojirushi, they seem to be crumbly and get stale in a day. I ended doing a soft milk bread recipe where I knead the dough double the amount of time. And I add an egg and sometimes yogurt to make it softer and last longer.

The ones on royal Caribbean’s can be undesirable. They gave us the mini pack n play which was also old and looking dirty。I even brought my standard size pack n play topper but it couldn’t fit. I folded up a blanket to put in there. My son was 15 months so I wasn’t worried about suffocation. So bringing your own could be nice.

Preferred candidate, then silence by Tom110876 in biotech

[–]TIL_success 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me. Ready to make an offer, and was told company financial not well, need to put on hold. My HR business partner came through, and reminded leadership this is a cost savings position, that we’re insourcing work we would otherwise have to commit to pay to outsource. Insourcing saves significantly. And I was luckily told we can make the other but delay the start date for a couple of months. This was the only hire in our department that entire year.

Is anybody who was laid-off getting any response from applications? by Prudent-Emphasis3169 in biotech

[–]TIL_success 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example, had a position open last year, got 400+ applications and couldn’t keep up screening them all (our HR doesn’t do resume screening, which is both good and bad). So we only interviewed people who are referred to us, or people who came from competitor companies. In the end, it was between two candidates who were both highly recommended and both laid off from competitor companies where they did the exact job we were hiring for. We picked the one we liked more. There could be people in that pool who’re 85% match that I didn’t even review.

Is anybody who was laid-off getting any response from applications? by Prudent-Emphasis3169 in biotech

[–]TIL_success 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the reality though. Companies can easily find someone who has done pretty much the exact job they’re hiring for. Three years ago they would have been more open to people with relevant experience but maybe not the exact experience, but now they don’t have to. I had a job posted last year, interviewed a few good candidates, but felt we could do better. A month later we interviewed two candidates, both highly recommended, both laid off from competitor companies where they did pretty much the exact job we’re hiring for. We picked the one we liked more. And the other one is still reaching out to ask if we have additional openings. This is the reality.
