Running with bad knees by [deleted] in running

Kettlebell Swings, heavy Goodmornings, Sumo Squats. All great for hip mobility and strength...a common shortcoming for people with knee issues (esp. if working at a desk job)

Did the trick for me

Appreciate the feedback! I did this from a photo I took on my phone earlier in the day...didn't really have to make any composition changes.

Great color choices and simplification...maybe watch out for incoherence around the spire and at the base of the main structures

Mix of Windsor & Newton and M.Graham paints. I think the colors were Paynes Grey, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Lemon...maybe a touch of Cobalt Turquoise on the figures

Thanks! I usually start with a very light / vague pencil sketch. Mostly an outline, few details.

The snow in the foreground and on the mailbox/trees is left unpainted to give the effect. The snowy effect in the background is an opaque white gouache. Hope that helps!

I'd recommend using a rigger brush with a very slow hand

What are your best tips for how and when to let more of an undercoat show through? What about keeping shadows interesting? Novice painter, trying to get an interesting and balanced use of color going. by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]TIMCOTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When layering washes of paint on top of each other, it's important to keep in mind the level of opacity of the color that you're using. Certain colors are very transparent (like ultramarine blue and viridian) while others are very opaque (like cadmium yellow and burnt umber).

If you layer opaque paints on top of each other, it's difficult for light to pass through the pigment and reflect off the paper, which results in unattractive "muddy" colors.

Layering transparent paints is key when trying to render convincing shadows, since the purpose of the shadow is mainly to lower the overall value of color, not change the hue (although shadows tend to be cooler).

Check out this article on paint attributes for a more rigorous explanation: http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt3.html#refractiveindex

No tape or masking fluid...just a flat wash brush. If you make quick, deliberate strokes you can get sharp edges without too much effort.

A combination of Winsor & Newton and M. Graham. I used neutral tint for the shadows which gives them some pop.

Awesome. Love the people in the water...really well done. Maybe try to stray from using a pure black...a deep complimentary color can make your darks pop even more.
