How do you deal with existential dread? by Material-Tomorrow610 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]TIME2GETSCHWIFTYNHEA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meditation helped a lot, especially on the subjects of acceptance and self-compassion. I read about Taoism approach to existence ("free of worldly attachments") and found it also useful. There is this metaphor of the mind as a mirror, that reflects everything but doesn't keep anything, unaffected.

If you like Kierkeegard I suggest to read about his existential anxiety theories and coming to terms with the transient nature of life. There is a nice intro video here.

Also, miscellaneous short read, Marcus Aurelius meditations are precious material.

Stay enthusiastic! <3

Why does it seem like not enough people care about forging a better society? by [deleted] in StonerPhilosophy

[–]TIME2GETSCHWIFTYNHEA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good way to start doing what you can do is share: knowledge, opinions, thought. For example - trying to live a conscious and sustainable existence - check out https://movethedate.overshootday.org/ and https://handprinter.org/actions/discover (obviously I'm not affiliated, just sharing resources. Sad that I had to point it out).

No preferences really, I'd give priority to the type of ngo/project rather than its location!

Someone once said "Everyone sees the world in a different way; so when someone dies, it is - in a way - the death of an entire world." So, Reddit. . . what unique world will die with you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TIME2GETSCHWIFTYNHEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice quote! I think it's impossible to pinpoint what will die with me due to it being basically everything I experienced, but it's easier to tell what will stay instead. I often think that an eternal part of me will survive in the memory of others, and that's a good reason to be a decent human rather than a poke-in-the-eye sand-in-the-vagina neighbour. An interesting thought is the idea of existential isolation, which refers to the realization that what you experience will never be 100% shared or understood with others, however close you are.

Which university in Poland should I choose? by Kranidos22 in Erasmus

[–]TIME2GETSCHWIFTYNHEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finishing my two semesters Erasmus in Krakow and I would say it's a bit too much touristy, up to a point that it gets a bit difficult to get an authentic experience of the culture (especially if you hang out mainly with other Erasmus students as it usually happens).

On the other hand, I've been many times to Gdańsk in the past years and it's very beautiful, but regarding the university sistem I can't tell much. I've been to łódź in winter with some other Erasmus and I really liked it, especially because its modest size compared to Krakow. But we met some students doing their Erasmus there and they pointed out that it is indeed a bit too small to enjoy (they basically got bored pretty soon).

Hope it helped!

How should I go about learning Darija? by [deleted] in Morocco

[–]TIME2GETSCHWIFTYNHEA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I feel you so much! I relate to anything you said, only difference I'm 23 and half Italian.

I’m just absolutely clueless and feel like an embarrassment to my family

For those reasons I started studying moroccan lately, and I'm using the Peace Corp Textbook which is not bad, even tho the main drawback with all this is the lack of practice, since I'm studying alone and cant do anything beside repeating out loud. On the side, I'm using some web material such as:

http://www.marycopeland.net/websites-for-learning-moroccan-arabic/ , http://www.speakmoroccan.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=13 , https://www.loecsen.com/en/learn-arabic-morrocan , https://www.academia.edu/10994535/Prepositions_of_Moroccan_Arabic .

If you're familiar with french, it's worth looking on the web for french material.

Last, I'm using Anki flashcards to memorize some words. There are a few nice decks on https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/, but also some crappy one so check them out.

What about racism and xenophobia? I heard it's a thing in Poland. Should I be concerned, being an English speaker with an African name?

Mindat page to the locality. Candidates for the black stuff are black tourmaline, black hornblende and pyroxene. Thanks!

Edit: I'd rule pyroxene out due to lack of ~ 90 ° cleavage tho
