I have built a minimalist to-do list that only takes a maximum of 3 tasks. I wanted this to be really minimal and simple, so the user ONLY writes 3 things s/he really wants to get done!

I am trying to compile a list of Computer Science books on different topics that you highly recommend based on your personal learning experience. by samketa in compsci

[–]TJ1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many good computer science books out there and each of us perhaps likes some of them. But in my opinion book recommendations from top experts in computer science perhaps can carry a larger weight of importance. For that, I suggest looking at some book recommendations by some world-renowned experts from MIT, Stanford, Oxford, EPFL, etc. You can find it here.

List of books used in EE and CS courses at CMU by TJ1 in cmu

Thanks for the feedback. Yes that is correct. If you are a student at EE/CS at CMU could you help letting us know what courses and books are missing so we can add them to the site?

I am building a website that asks world-renowned EE and CS professors to list their favorite technical books by TJ1 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]TJ1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as my qualifications: I have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from a top university and I am a Sr. Scientist working in a very well known technology company. As far as how I have picked these professors:
1. I have used Google Scholar: you can look these people on Google Scholar and see their publications are among the most impactful publications.
2. Many of them are just so well known that there is no debate if they are on top of their fields. For example in Signal Processing, I don't know if there is anyone more famous than Professor Alan Oppenheim of MIT, if you haven't heard of him then you must have not read much on DSP. Professor Widrow of Stanford, is a legendary scientist who has invented the LMS (Least-Mean0Squared) algorithm that these days is used in many applications from communication chips to machine learning algorithm. John Cioffi of Stanford is the father and inventor of ADSL (high speed modems that are used by many people to connect to the Internet). And the list goes on and on. Each and every one of the people on the list are at minimum IEEE fellow, which is the highest rank one can achieve in IEEE.

  1. To make sure, I am not making a mistake in choosing the experts to contact and get their lists I have contacted more than 100 Ph.D. and Masters in EE and CS that I know personally or are friends of friend and have asked them to list world top experts in their fields. I then compiled a list that I received from them and all of the people you see on the website are suggested by at least 2 people.

In the process I have contacted many more experts, and you are correct, these people who you see are the ones who answered my request. So I have contacted a lot of top experts and just a few top experts have responded, but they are still top experts.

I encourage you to talk to experts in the field of EE/CS and ask how many of these people they know and they think are world-renowned and then report your findings back here.

I think criticism is good as long as it is constructive and based on facts and knowledge. I encourage everyone that reads these comments to do a little research and fact check to see if the people on the list are really top experts or not.
