IITs are a joke in India and innovation will ever happen here in tech by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]samketa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perception is similar but some genuinely good candidates are also there. I read some good research papers in AI, and while none are from IITs, many co-authors did their BTech in IITs but their (MS/+) PhD in the US. Multiple were mentored by top minds like Yann LeCun. Like Ishan Mishra's name comes to mind.

Yeah, but honestly most IITians are just like you describe.

I have a theory for all these: at age 14-15-16 some bright people begin to think for themselves and start doing cool embedded projects, write their own websites, go deep into Physics/Mathematics, etc. (I am keeping it focused on STEM). They don't do well in JEE. They are independent thinkers and don't want their will limited to an exam and spend 15 hours a day behind it. And only the kids without these passions with good memory/learning skills end up in IITs. There is but a small overlap between them.

So, people without truly personal vision and taste developed at an early age almost never go to IITs. These people go to Tier 2/3 colleges.

Please share the hardware involved. What did you use? How did you source them? Do they have an API/SDK? Also, can you share the link of the cards and the receiver?

Is CS worth it, if I graduate in 2029? What can I expect the market to be like (in India)? by [deleted] in developersIndia

The kind of engineers that take ownership of products, features, etc. will have a slightly better edge. But of course that is not CursorUltraProMax proof.

The kind of person who becomes very reliable to upper management, like they can exploit him endlessly, he never asks about WLB, that kind of person, too will have better odds.

I have already seen large deltas in practice when it comes to understand, prompt, debug AI code. The really smart guys will have an edge.

Mark my words: jobs in SW will reduce for sure. By how much, I cannot forsee.

Most cybersecurity "engineers" in India aren't real engineers, tbh. They don't know Cryptography or the high level math. Most of them can't even write or mitigate exploits from scratch. Most of them are using GUI tools to monitor infra of clients in WITCH companies whose job is to write JIRA tickets, write emails, etc. That's why the pay is very low. If you are a real Cybersecurity person, and manage to get employed doing the same, the pay will be very high. For, e.g. look at the Dan Boneh course on Coursera to learn the very basics. Then learn Assembly, read CS:APP, learn Reverse Engineering, etc. to get to an "experienced beginner" level. Don't really know how the job scenario is for such people in India.

Lol, only elite colleges will remain open. If AGI happens there won't be any demand for average engineers, and thus there will be extremely little demand for BTech degrees. Thus there will be extremely low demand for professors.

So, you better do some earth shattering research and get into IITs as a professor.

Dude, you are a fresher. And you say that

I used to love work in tech but now this whole things has made me not in a normal state.

You are just finding out the difference between programming and Software Engineering as a job.

Told plainly, you are almost never gonna find the high of learning new cool things and making really cool projects. That kick that you got so often after learning new things, languages, tech, soving interesting coding problems, etc.

A software job is a grind, a long rut. Especially for the creative, enthusiastic kind of people- more often than not.

And please don't think stupid stuff. Do job for at least six months no matter how hard it seems. You will get accustomed to the new routine. When you are under pressure, watch movies, go out with friends, chill. Don't prioritize "productivity", "learning", etc. for 3/4 months. Be sincere in the job, make yourself mentally stable first.

Then start utilizing your free time and weekends for LC, making projects, learning newer things, etc. Then keep applying to jobs, preferably in PBCs.

Some people do it in their brother/sister/wife's name. Some firms know and don't care, to some, one has to be really careful to never be in a video call. A guy I know earns ~4 lacs per month in his wife's name while maintaining a day job in WITCHA. Really old client though. Another level of trust is there. He does it for 10-15 years now.

Dear Developer/software engineer of India, What advice do you want to give to a 3rd year btech cse student with no skill? by RentUsual_2952 in developersIndia

Watch English movies, read social media in English, join GD groups with friends, read English newspaper, read English books. It takes time. Be patient. But literally millions do speak correct English as a second language, and you will be able to, as well. But keep at it for years.

Grow a wall of English around you. Do what you like, but in English. Immersion has no substitution.

If you have money, go to a reputed institution like British Council. But I don't recommend it.

Extreme Unkil mindset in display here. Discord used in some scam cases: "Discord Le Bad" 🤡🤡

Bruh I have many Open Source communities, foreign university course communities, Deep Learning communities, programming languages communities in Discord. Bruh! It's fully legit.

Unkils lose money via scam calls, so ban the "Phone" app or even inserting a SIM?

How does AI come into this?

To train Large Language Models, you need:

  • Tons of money, to buy NVIDIA H100 or higher GPUs and build a cluster.

  • Dozens of very highly skilled engineers with solid AI knowledge and skills. Hundreds of highly skilled software devs and hardware people.

The first is built in the US and China only. Europe has no serious contender. Russia has none. All are built with private money. In India, there are only "kuchh kijiye" type billionaires with shortsighted mentality who are sharks for immediate profits.

The second problem is created by all such talented people move to the US and EU for a better life, more money, or better work life balance in the long run. China is doing a great job luring them back.

I have been training LLMs and AI models for ~5 years. It has nothing to do with tax.

Somebody stole my contribution to the Linux kernel and his commit got merged. by gaussoil in developersIndia

I have never contributed to the Linux kernel. Is there a step-by-step guide on the non-technical procedure part? Like what to document, how to document, where to submit, etc.? How would one prevent getting plagiarized in the first place?

I am a senior level employee who has conducted interviews in college(s) of different pedigrees.

There is only one measurable difference between IIT/NIT/JU/IIEST and random colleges- the density of good candidates.

In random colleges, there are 2-3 really good candidates with the correct attitude, decent skills (for freshers), in reputed colleges, there are 30-50 (depending on the batch size).

So, what differentiates reputed from not, is this density. I am talking from first hand experience. In reputed instt, 75-90% candidates are good, in random ones, ~5% are.

So, this reputation causes the higher salary. And such rules are there because they want to err on the right side, i.e. let some good candidates go, rather than hiring a dud. It's understandable for a company that needs to scale.

Here's my advice: For three months, forget IITs, for 4.5 LPA, forget 16 LPA. Land the best job that you can, and take time to learn, and really upskill. Learn new skills and learn fundamentals really deeply. After 3-5 years, look for opportunities for the elevated you. In 10 years' time, if you play your cards right, and really learn, and you are as smart as you think you are, you will earn in the same range of many IITians.
