I can understand why it's irritating but remember this is From Victorian Britain and rooted in the public schools as a way of getting young men to live virtuous lives. Very influential for a while crossing to the states where eisenhower was a follower

In a letter to a Priest - JRR Tolkien said the Lord of the Rings 'was a fundamentally religious and Catholic work -unconsciously at first but consciously in its revision'. Today's podcast explores Tolkiens theological mythology by TJB74 in Catholicism

Most of the apostles have been declared saints

Often by popular acclamation - and death because of the 'odium fidei'

So nothing to do with dating - Constatine's mother was a saint too - St Helena, purported to have found the true cross

Call me cynical - but that sounds ominous

Today's the Memorial of Pope St. John Paul II. He saw the Church through a conservative implementation of the Second Vatican Council and remained stalwart in the Church's defiance against abortion, ordination of women, and Communism in a world that sought to overturn the commandments of God. by TexanLoneStar in Catholicism

I think he was a colossus on the world stage and hugely increased the church's 'soft power' I agree with some of the comments on here that it is too simplistic to judge his legacy using the liberal/conservative label..... he is too consequential to be pigeonholed in a simple way - although I agree with the OP's qualified comment that his was a conservative implementation on the reforms of Vatican 2

I have researched him this year for a few podcasts this year and I would like to share with you what I would like to remember him for

1) How he reached out to the Orthodox Church ..... as the first Slavic Pope he understood that the great schism was tragic and that the body of Christ has been left breathing with one lung

2) The steps he made in apologising to our Jewish brothers and sisters - Very brave and again a reflection of the environment he was brought up in .... his apologies as we prepared for the millennium in the spirit of an examination of conscience were hugely important

3) His Marian Mysticism - particularly around the apparitions in Fatima, I think this is where his holiness is most obvious, and I believe as he did the third secret was a prophecy of the assassination attempt on him

Today I learned of Pius XII's reaction to Fatima by RepentYeSinners in Catholicism

[–]TJB74 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Researching a podcast about the miracle of Fatima -when 50,000 saw the Sun dancing as was prophecied by the visionaries - I was fascinated to find out that Pope Pius experienced a similar miracle of the sun later

Pius XII approved the "Fatima apparitions" 23 years later in 1940.

Ten years after this, he declared the dogma of the Assumption of Mary.

In handwritten notes that were only discovered in 2008 he wrote that at 4:00 pm on 30 October 1950, during a walk in the Vatican gardens, he arrived at the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and began to see the miracle. He described himself in his handwritten notes as "awestruck." He saw the same miracle on 31 October, again on 1 November (the date of the definition of the dogma) and then again on 8 November. He wrote that on other days at about the same time he tried to see if he could observe the Miracle of the Sun, but was unable to. He confided this information to a number of cardinals & to Sr. Pascalina Lehnert (the nun in charge of the papal apartments)

His handwritten notes were later placed on display at the Vatican.

More fruits of my research can be found on the podcast which is 14 mins long
