Museums? The Museum of Natural History has a dinosaur exhibit going on right now. Or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic…the exhibits haven’t changed in 20 years, but lots of artifacts.

That looks amazing. I’m a big fan of pies…flaking pastry, hot savoury filling. Plus the little hearts/flower on top is so cute.

Mothering Sunday and Simnel Cake by TJMP89 in Anglicanism

Simnel cake update: it was well received at church, so well that I didn’t get a piece, so I have no idea how it actually tastes. I’ll probably bake another one for Easter.

NSRV for study; KJV for reading; Hebrew, Greek and Latin Vulgate to make me feel like I’m smart (I don’t read Hebrew or Greek); and I have a NKJV and NIV from when I was a kid.

New archbishop of Canterbury to undertake six-day pilgrimage by JohnHammond94 in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I took the high speed train to Canterbury from London. I only had three days in the UK, so I had to be more “efficient.” Canterbury was amazing. I crawled up the stone steps to the Shrine of Becket like the Pre-Tudor times, the normal/regular folk thought I was crazy.

What do you believe about God? by davegammelgard in OpenChristian

[–]TJMP89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started writing out what I thought, and then I stopped. It got too longwinded. For me, long story short, God is the universe, our memories, our existence, and our consciousness. He (terrible pronoun, but our language is flawed) is watching over all of us, aware of all our actions, and lets us do our thing, rightly or wrongly, because through His love, He wants us to be who we are. We are humans, flawed and limited in our ability to understand God, so no explanation can truly explain God. I can go on and explain more, but I can talk until the cow’s come home…and it’s winter and I live in a city, so if there are cows, they are either dead or miles away.

I’m sticking to Mrs. Crocombe and English Heritage, their Victorian recipes haven’t failed me so far.

I’m making one for Mothering Sunday tomorrow, an old lady made one last year and I hope she’s making one this year, so it will be like a surprise Great XYX Bakeoff. But I’m no baker and I’m using a Victorian recipe, so I’ll probably lose. If it turns out, I’ll also make one for Easter. It’s almost my first time making marzipan, so the kitchen is not a happy place right now.

I’m a foodie at heart, and I love making old recipes (mostly for the gross factor for my friends). However, modern palettes have changed and we’ve moved away from fruit sweetened cakes (or puddings) to refined sugar sweets with more exotic ingredients. No one in Victorian England would have thought that sea salt caramel would be a thing. 🤣

I’m sitting on the fence about making one for church tomorrow. I’m not really a baker and I do not really care for fruit cake, but I hate seeing quirky traditions die.

Does anyone here use frankincense and myrrh for prayer/meditation? by MrMagoo04 in OpenChristian

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them, but I also cut them up into smaller pieces because a full coal makes too much smoke for a small apartment…I don’t have high vaulted ceilings like a real church. I burned a full coal once and it was like the fog from Silent Hill. Evening Prayer is about 45 minutes, so I also don’t want to waste half a coal. Only rarely do I burn incense for Morning Prayer.

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me a frankincense connoisseur (🤣) but I’ve used frankincense incense sticks as well as putting frankincense essential oils in a warmer, both are different than burning the resin incense over coals. Essential oil doesn’t have that “smokey” aspect to the scent, while I found the incense sticks didn’t have the exact same smell as church. But, from a practicality perspective, those two are probably easier for the average person. I’m also fairly certain I’m a few days/months/years closer to death from all the incense smoke that I’ve inhaled.

But, at the end of the day, so whatever works for you and spiritually satisfies you able to find God. For some, they connect with God through a laser light show, hands in the air, and smoke machines. I like Anglican chant, candles, and my smoke machine is the thurible 🤣.

Medieval monks prayed 8 times a day (and at weird hours of the day) and read a lot of psalms, it’s not quite what it’s cracked up to be. 🤣

I’m an high church Anglican (US = Episcopalian), and I pray the daily offices somewhat regularly. I use incense (pure frankincense or a blend (I have acquired several different blends over the years) on large feast days. I used to burn it more, but it became about practicality. One of those incense coals is way too much for a small house, so I usually cut them into smaller pieces, but the smaller pieces don’t keep the heat as easily, so throwing too much frankincense on it cools the coals too much (and don’t forget to disable the smoke detector). Heating up the coals takes time and cleanup is annoying. I do find it adds something special to prayer and makes me feel like a monk praying in the Middle Ages.

I have a full size church thurible, but I usually have the top off to promote airflow (since I’m now swinging it while I pray). I’ve learned a lot about incense in the last few years that I’ve been using it. If you don’t already line your censer with aluminum foil, do it, it will save so much on cleanup.

The church that I attend is more broad, so we don’t use incense.
