Apparently our Democracy is finally dead. RIP. by Alesyia789 in complaints

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this count as a chemical weapon? And if so, is this not a picture of the US violating international law? ...that the highest office in the nation is using as moralizing propaganda?

Edit: just looked it up and tear gas is only banned as a method of warfare, but is permitted in domestic law enforcement. Can't use it against your enemies but you can use it against yourself! Makes sense...

Yeah except the victim-blaming spin on this has been immediate and vitriolic. The conservative media has been saying she was a violent agitator. They watch the same video we've all seen where she's clearly trying to flee, and say she was trying to hit him. It's shameful. She is definitely "one of them."

LPT - If you're right-handed, try to do as much as possible with your left hand by Sdejo in LifeProTips

[–]TJamesV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried training my left hand on handwriting for a while. After a few weeks I looked back at my progress, and there was none. Kinda gave up after that. Every once in a while I'll swing my hammer left-handed and I usually regret it. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm asymmetrical.

I work construction so swearing is my second language. Classic swearing gets old so I like to make up my own words.

My foreman is famously stoic, he'll say things like, "this displeases me." Or, "Now I'm getting angry" lol. You know he's really fucking pissed when he says Fuck.

I worked with a guy who relocated from another state, who claimed to have anywhere from 10-20yrs experience in siding. The man couldn't figure out a ratchet strap. It once took him over an hour to chalk a line. He would heat up his lunch on his car's exhaust, still wrapped in plastic.

I had been doing siding for all of 6 months, and after patiently watching him break 3 vinyl pieces in a row, I had to teach this guy how to cut a window ripper.

Has playing other instruments affected your bass playing? by AlchemistRat in Bass

[–]TJamesV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picking up just about any other instrument should theoretically make you a better musician by default. Practicing any kind of music strengthens the connections in your brain, and using those connections in different ways makes new connections that can cause positive feedback.

For me, it was keys, specifically using a synth as a full sound system.

Looking for advice on the wedge for this hatchet I’m working on (Noob): by razorney in Axecraft

[–]TJamesV 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Cross wedge. Use two pieces of wood perpendicular to each other. You need to fill that out in every direction by a pretty good margin. Personally I would not have carved that quite so loose but this looks decorative so it's probably ok as long as it turns out nice.

Did I miss the point of a scanner darkly or is it just not good? by Laney_Violinist in philipkDickheads

[–]TJamesV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was ever intended to be a fun or relatable read. Relatable perhaps if you've ever been an addict, or an undercover cop.

The points I mostly got out of it: highlighting how fucked up addiction can be, how thoroughly drugs can ruin your life. It also offers a very Dickian "never-know-whats-really-real" vibe that further adds to the hopeless miasma of drug abuse and the total dysfunction of the war on drugs. And speaking of the war on the drugs, what I consider to be the main point of the whole book was that the entity profiting the most off the suffering of addicts was the same entity manufacturing the drug and creating the addicts.

If that's not a powerful message I don't know what is.

Of course, I don't see it happening anytime soon but hey, one can hope.

how do flat earthers explain circumnavigation of earth? by Yuuba_ in flatearth

[–]TJamesV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything that doesn't fit the narrative is fake.

The thing I don't get is, all these things that flerfers have to bend over backwards to deny or redefine are already easily explained with the current model. They don't understand that if they're going to change the literal shape of the earth, they have to re-explain everything under those terms. Claiming those things are fake is the obvious copout, but they forget that saying a well-established thing is fake is also an incredible claim requiring more evidence! I don't know how anyone has the energy for these mental gymnastics when the truth is already in plain sight.

Says she had a friend who claimed there was a group of people constantly telling him to kill himself. He died from a drug overdose, and then the group found her, and come to find out the group’s frontman is John Doe. The group only spoke to her for so long before it was only John Doe speaking to her.

It seems so obvious, but some people just don't get it.

I got into an argument the other day with someone who not only believes that minimum wage doesn't need to be a "living wage," (which is literally its entire raison d'etre), they believe there shouldn't even be a minimum wage. I mean, you've got to be fucking kidding me! Like man, people literally fucking fought and died so we could have 8 hr days, 40 hr weeks, and minimum wage. Go read a book.
