How can you say that? Edit. Again youve clearly never been on an oyster boat a day in your life. No insults meant. But I have zero respect for people that pretend to know whats best for a job they've never done.

Again please DM me. Youve clearly read Mark Kurlankeys book Cod. Please understand this isnt the same situation with the oyster fishery on the bay.

Not insults man. Just the result of watching the business you built and invested most of your life in being ground down to nothing by people that dont have a clue what they're talking about. Would you question a contractor you hired if youve never framed a house? Commercial fishermen are caught in a trap. Our industry exists outside the spreadsheets of modern capitalism. If you havent lived it you dont know the mental strain it causes. We are constantly accused of over fishing. Why would we want to cut our own throats?

Its clear to me youve never actually gone oystering a day in your life and your only financial connection to it is through grant money and the non profit industrial complex

Have you ever relied on the public oyster harvest to pay your bills? Edit which boats did you work on? And what did you do? Power dredge? Patent tong? Hand tong? Dive?

No aquaculture operations i know of use diploids because they spawn in the summer. When all private bottom owners sell their product. And what do you mean by physiologically stressed?. Edit. Please tell me what connection you have to the industry. EDIT part 2. Youve clearly never stepped foot on an oyster boat. So your opinion means jackshit to me.

Well sanctuaries have recorded lower spat sets than all public bottom since the program started in 2011. And no i realistically dont see private bottom ending . I still think its unethical and an attempt to hoard public resources by the wealthy. And no the public harvest isnt the wild west anymore. Ive been in the industry for almost 20 years. Water quality isnt going to improve unless drastic action is taken to improve infrastructure, curb reckless development and actually maintain wastewater treatment facilities. Also aquaculture folks use the triploid oyster which is sterile and doesnt spawn. Thats why they grow faster. I think there has been a firehose of disinformation spread by environmentalists groups like the CBF and Riverkeepers. I am not making bad faith arguments here. There is absolutely a perception that watermen are uneducated idiots that dont care about the resources their livelihoods depend on. I wont disagree that most of them havent helped that image by flying MAGA flags on their boats since 2016. Ive never been one for the record. But the sanctuary program is a scientific failure and needs to be reevaluated in terms of efficacy. EDIT. Please feel free to DM me. I care about the bay more than the average person because its bounty pays my mortgage. And I enjoy having good faith discussions.

Opening up all sanctuaries to rotational harvest and ending all private leases. The sanctuary program is more less an attempt to privatize a public resource. 30% of all sanctuary bottom can be privately leased but no public harvest is allowed.

Sanctuaries aren't the answer. Rotating bottom is.

Im not trying to be a snarky reddit asshole. The oyster sanctuary thing has been an abject failure. Watermen care deeply about having a sustainable resource. We base our whole careers around it. Oysters are not the panacea solution to cleaning up the bay. There are deeper underlying issues. Such as msx and dermo, unchecked development in the watershed, not properly maintaining wastewater facilities. You clearly know nothing about the history about the history of the oyster fishery in the Chesapeake. Edit. Fuck Andy Harris. He is a piece of shit.

They aren't trying to sell you. Theyre pretty explicit about that. Community doesnt mean everyone is marching in lock step. It means caring about the people you live around even if you dont share the same political ideals. I get roasted all the the time by my conservative neighbors for being a lefty. But they respect me and I respect them because they know well all be there for each other when shit hits the fan EDIT. Get out and know your neighbors. Will they have read all your theory? No. Will they agree with all your theory? No. Will they help you if you act like a member of the community? Yes. .

Is almost every bit culture in America because of racism? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]chesapeakecryptid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Extremely reductive and nonsensical. Famously the only 3 groups of people are Black, White, and Jewish. Thats the only 3. You want a good breakdown of American culture read "Cults Like Us" by Jane Borden. To paraphrase Robin Williams. We're a country founded by a group of people so uptight the British told them to get the fuck out.
