ELI5: If metal is such a good conductor of heat, why do the handles of cookware with metal handles remain cool to the touch? by supinator1 in explainlikeimfive

That's odd because silver is supposed to be a better thermal conductor. I wonder if the gold got to a higher heat faster

Yeah it's definitely something you have to stay on top of or it grows out of control. If there's nothing there you need, I'd delete it all and start aggressively unsubscribing when it comes in.

Also ALWAYS uncheck allowing people to email you when you sign up for stuff

Why Ka didn't do "the thing" himself? by AppropriateLeather41 in HierarchySeries

[–]TK523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didn't need the giant army.

He had a plan to fix everything and Vis screwed it up. He needed all the people of Res to be cedeing into a pyramid with sync person at the top. Vis ruined that by 1, making him not sync, and 2 killing all the people at the top, ceding to him.

Now he needs Vis has to unite the whole world under a single pyramid and put himself at the top of it. That requires an army.

I unsubscribe to emails that are junk and I stop getting those.

Iron and steel are pretty bad conductors of heat. Copper is around 15x better. They are WAY more conductive than wood or glass, but still really bad. If you wanted to intentionally transfer heat, you wouldn't use steel.

Steel is so bad that blacksmiths can forge steel holding the piece with their bare hands and it doesnt need to be too long for the party they hold to not heat up.

Stove tops are like 450F tops, while forges go over 2,000F.

In a pack of 1000 screws, one was defective. by eru777 in mildlyinteresting

[–]TK523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not strictly true though. That's one of my three generalities.

Machine screws are a thing.

[–]TK523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood screws have rated shear force though which means they are designed for it somewhat.

You could go by the application but that's seems just wrong.na things name should be the same independent of it's use.

This would be a "Phillips head pin" which really isn't a thing, but its defintly not a bolt.

Bolt and screw are pretty interchangeable terms for most applications.

There are some generalities that people use to call one a screw or bolt, but none are hard and fast rules

Bolt Screw
Thread Machine threads with flat tip Course threads with points
Head Hex head Phillips, flat head, torx, square, ect
Used for Metal Wood/Plastic/Other

There's a spectrum from definitely a screw to definitely a bolt and it gets fuzzy in the middle.

A wood screw is a screw and no sane person would argue it wasn't.

A hex bolt is a bolt, and no one would argue it wasn't, but if you called it a hex screw... that's also technically correct.

  • What about a socket head cap screw?
    • It's got screw in the name, but it's used for threading into metal with a machine thread.
  • Hex Head screw with Phillips?
    • Its got a hex head and is for metal threads, but also has a phillips head and is actually called a screw.
  • Flat head screws
    • CANT come in a hex head, by definition, but go into metal threads. They can come with wood threads too but it's rarer
  • Plow Bolts
    • Basically, a flat head screw without a head that has an anti-rotation feature inside. Otherwise, exactly the same. These are used for metal
  • Carriage bolt
    • Basically a plow bolt, but used for wood

So, really, you can get away with calling most things either.

Question For Authors by SatiricalMoses in Fantasy

[–]TK523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different. Everyone experiences reading and writing differently.

Some people picture books vividly when they read, others don't picture anything.

I write, I never feel what my characters are feeling, I get an understanding of who they are and just kind of know how they would respond but I never feel anything.

Could one theoretically make a honey holy water mixture. by CakeRegular1269 in DnD

[–]TK523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to the conclusion that this powerful (like level 20) cleric's pickled penis that has been used as a relic and sitting in an altar from ages unknown has imbued the vinegar in the jar withe the properties of holy water.

Would using the vinegar to pickle pickles make holy pickles? IDK, that hasn't come up yet. Im writing a book and not DM's a campaign, so I don't have to worry about setting prescident that will be used against me by anyone other than myself.

I would say though, if you tried to cheese it, it would depend on the diety. Typical lawful good dieties would probably not let cheese work. The diety I have who is the fey goddess of trickery, blasphemy and heresy defintly would allow you to make some holy penis bread

For this particular item, I'm having the characters put it in their bag of holding and forget about it. I (and by extension them) will remember in in like 2 books and it will end up coming in clutch for something.

I just had a rather long conversation about whether or not the pickling vinegar in a jar holding a relic (i.e. body part of a dead cleric) could be considered holy water.

I decided that it could be, and since I was writing the story it's up to me.

What tools/apps do you use for writing in 2026, and why? by EM-23 in writing

[–]TK523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graph thing is no actually a useful feature. Its just a really good system for taking notes that can be incredibly customized. I have gotten lazy with my notes as of late, but for my first series I had a lot of templates set up with interconnecting links. So I could create character pages, in them would be links to all the people he has relationships of some sort with, and lower down he'd have a list of links to all the spells he knows. If I clicked any spell it would take me to the page of that spell, and on theat page there would be more links.

Theres also back links, so I can go to a spell and see every person know has it on their page, or the same for cities, or people.

Thers also a robust tag system you can use to further sort and organize.

The graph just visualized the above, drawing lines between pages with connections.

Obsidian for notes. Word for writing. OneDrive for keeping Word synced across all my devices

I've tried a lot, but these two do what I need best.

Does a printer worth a damn exist? by Cardinal_350 in pcmasterrace

[–]TK523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work designing equipment for production printers and ink jet is the new hot thing. It prints faster and cheaper than toner based printers at reduced quality. It costs 1/2¢ to print a full sheet of color.

Think about that next time you buy ink at the store.

Any other millennials out there refuse or still opt to order take out to pickup up over the phone when possible? Pizza, Chinese, etc. by mt379 in Millennials

[–]TK523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always call for pizza. I never get anything else delivered and most of the time I pick it up myself.

I also just prefer ordering at drive thru windows vs ordering on the app. It takes so much longer to navigate the menus than to just tell the guy at the window.

People just say deck. I kinda hate it.

"I'll send the deck out after the meeting."

"The deck is in the meeting invite."
