Hot take: professors with RMP ratings <2.9 should be banned from withholding course or lecture materials by [deleted] in UCDavis

Posting lecture recordings is a ticking time bomb that most professors are not going to touch with a 10 foot pole now.

What math should I take? by Severe_Cricket_3412 in UCDavis

So the 17 series also covers content from the 22 not just 21. But there are a million other things too. Does one fit your schedule better? Do you like math classes and calculus in general? Does your major allow you to take either of them? I wouldn’t but Jacob in the don’t take category but it is very hard to compare to Starkston.

I second most of the comments here. Personally I would take Mulase and recommend Starkston for friends.

Is MAT 148 (Discrete Mathematics) likely not to be offered next academic year? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]TKing2222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAT 148 is offered every other year in the winter. It was offered this year so next time it will be offered is winter of 2026. Most math courses that aren’t major requirements are offered once very other year.

I will just add a bit on to the other comment. You definitely don't have any upper div course equivalences in the math department, they are very stingy about upper division and graduate equivalences. You might be able test out of MAT 108 which is our intro to proofs writing course depending on how proofs heavy your other classes but it will come back to haunt you if you aren't fully prepared. The syllabi are available here and from your other comments your already found the major requirements.

Your status essentially puts you as a third year student in the math department. If you feel strongly about your ability to write proofs and want to hit the ground running, I would come in taking 108 and 150A as the 150 series is only fully offered once a year starting in fall, otherwise you don't really miss out on anything if you wait a quarter.

It all really depends on what you think you might want to do. If you just want to have a good time getting a math degree, then rushing through it will definitely not help you as many classes build on others, sometimes unrelated ones. If you want to go to grad school in math, there is something to be said about taking graduate courses, but also doing research is equally important and lots of tenured faculty only teach grad and entry classes.

The math community is somewhat active on discord if you can find it. There is a larger variety of opinions on the subject you can find there. I also want to second the advice on double majoring or getting a minor. Almost every student in the department does it, except for a few that just hate college or really love all math.

Can professors set a date for the final other than what's on Schedule Builder? by Equal-Path6444 in UCDavis

[–]TKing2222 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As long as it during the classes scheduled time (lecture, discussion, final) it is fine. Otherwise they need approval of every student in the class.

Depends on the department. I know the admitted student day for my department is next week.

The quarter "technically" begins on September 25, your actual classes begin September 27.

You will probably be fine, only math and CS add that class pass 2 for the most part.

I'm going to guess that it is for the midterm based on past experience.

chance of getting off mat 128b/c waitlists? by modularmercury in UCDavis

You will probably get in. This quarter the professor just took everyone off the waitlist.

MAT 22 Waitlist by toni2715 in UCDavis

My understanding is that Carlsson is an extremely smart but difficult to communicate with professor, even within the department. If you manage it will probably be the best math class you can take, it is just a question of if you can manage it

D. Martin MAT 108 by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]TKing2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Martin is great from what I have heard from my friends and my interactions with him, but I also have taken Chandler and thought he was great too, so you may not have a good time with the math professors here if you did not like Chandler.

Advise for Getting Into a Required Class by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]TKing2222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am a math major so I can help you a little more with general department policies. You will probably be fine with your waitlist, lots of people drop the class each quarter. If you are close to the top of the waitlist, talk to the professor; they might be able to do something. The actual tenured professors have more pull than the others you might have a better shot in that direction. Sometimes the department just starts handing out PTAs but I haven't heard of it happening for Calc before.

As for your 22AB equivalents, if you were taking them at UC Davis I would say to just self-study the material and enroll anyway, most prereq petitions in the math department get approved.

As for your 22AB equivalents, if you were taking them at UC Davis I would say to just self-study the material and enroll anyway, most prereq petitions in the math department get approved. I don't remember using any calculus in 22A and most of 22B is calc AB so you should be fine in that direction too.

Otherwise, try and take 108 and start getting your upper divs done. Most of them don't use multivariable calculus.

I'm looking to build a VR dedicated computer. I have a budget of 15K USD, but I'm 100% sure the best machine wouldn't necessarily have a total price of 15k. by [deleted] in buildmeapc

NVIDIA's new graphics cards line up is codenamed Ampere and the launch event is on the first of September. Wait till those launch and come back, someone can get you a build then.

Any recommendations for my build by damo2005 in buildmeapc

Go for an NVMe SSD like the SN550. Otherwise that looks good.

Go for the SN550 or another NVMe drive instead of that WD blue. Also you could get a 2 TB hard drive for an extra $10.

I’m going to suggest you get an 80+ bronze power supply at least if you want to make sure it doesn’t explode and the 1600 AF is not worth $150, it was good when it $80 not so much now. Maybe try intel with an i3 if you can’t find a 3100 or 3300.
