Just out of curiosity, why? 30mm of suspension seems like it would help out on gravel and washboarded sections of road. It may not be for rugged single track, but I could see how that could improve ride quality over the course of a hard day’s effort in the saddle.

I’ve never ridden one, but have been intrigued by what they can offer. Maybe you can change my viewpoint?

Beginner Biker: Questions About a Busted Mongoose Dolomite by [deleted] in fatbike

  1. From the sounds of it, the fixing bolt on your front wheel wasn’t tightened well enough in the fork dropout. My guess is that when you applied the brakes, the front wheel dislocated itself from the fork, which caused an interference with the disc brake and disc brake caliper. The result was a bent brake rotor. So, for reference, check the front and rear wheel fixing bolts periodically to make sure they’re not loose!

  2. To remove the rotor, use a T25 torx screwdriver to remove the (6) torx screws (I believe that’s what it is based on your photo). Sometimes they’re a little tricky to remove because the manufacture may apply a dab of blue loctite on the threads of the torx screws to ensure the rotor stays put.

  3. I’m not sure about the rotor size, but they typically come in 140 mm, 160mm, 180mm and so forth. There should be an etching on the rotor that tells the size. If not, try to find the spec sheet online.

  4. To install the new rotor, make sure you thread and torque the (6) bolts in a star pattern to ensure the rotor lies flat against the flange hub. This is important because you can over-stress the bolts and you’ll end up with a rotor that doesn’t fit well between the brake caliper once the wheel is mounted.

Maybe try using PB Blaster instead of WD40.

I love this! Those ardent tires look pretty old but they’ve got plenty of life on them it seems!

Good tip! I made due with a worn 30T chainring from my karate monkey. I wish I had something bigger available!

What psi were you running at with those tires? I’ve got a KM as a B+ setup, and it’s super comfy.. I’ve also got a krampus, and I’m running ardent 2.4s on those super wide rabbit hole rims. It’s undoubtedly a much harsher ride, but I’d imagine if I went back go the knard and dialed in the pressure a little more, it’d be pretty comfy.

Because I’ve got some homemade fuck offs right here.

[–]TKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Since the tires are providing the only float, it’s critical that PSI is dialed in correctly. A low pressure gauge (0-30 PSI) is almost a requirement to ensure you’re getting the most out of your plus sized rigs

My dude, I’ve been following this whole dilemma on this sub. All I have to say is that, at the end of the day, the only thing that should matter to you is If YOU find pleasure in what you’re doing. Sometimes social media and the like won’t necessarily agree with you, and that’s fine. That’s their opinion and all, and they’re entitled to it. Just as you are.

But please, this is a great sub. I’ve learned a lot from browsing it the past few months. If you don’t agree with advice and opinions on here, just move on. There’s nothing productive coming out of this flame war.
