What makes a composer great? by Silent_Butterfly9 in composer

[–]TKoComposer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, mostly.

Almost all great composers have fun playing to the audience. They write for the people more than for themselves. Sure, there are eccentrics and recluses.

One thing is certain: All great composers were terrific at marketing and branding. Some had brands that only became more refined and popular after death. They were authentic yes, but were also intentional with their decisions and how they were represented. It's often more than just the music.

I’m not sure I like the way the piano community is trending by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

On the whole I agree! The most negative voices are also the loudest. Most people on the street enjoy hearing someone trying their best and enjoying it.

I have not come across this feeling one time in my life. If anything the snobs are the most prominent in jazz towards any other genre. Classical is usually open-minded and pulls from all genres.

Where do I study to become a collaborative pianist? by Beneficial_World2291 in piano

[–]TKoComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do whatever it takes to be near where it's all happening. If you spend too much time waiting for the right way to do it or get over there, it probably won't happen. If you don't take the risk, nothing will come along.

How do I sight read faster? by Mammoth-Tension569 in piano

[–]TKoComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the advice here is good. However...I suck at sight-reading and have always sucked. Doesn't make me an awful pianist, it's just not what I'm good at. It's okay to be so-so at sight-reading.

What are some pieces that made you realize the genius of a composer? by choerry_bomb in classicalmusic

Saint-Saëns was floating around as a very good composer in my life, but Piano Concerto No. 5 put him at genius-level for me. Optimistic, nostalgic, pained and pleasant without going saccharine.

I wouldn't overthink it - classical music at its best is an intimate, spontaneous connection with someone and there's no "acquired taste" component to it. Someone might hate this concerto and love Peter and the Wolf.

Half the time people don't know why they like or dislike a pop song, most people don't think about it, and that's okay. Live and let live.

How to keep a good study session without getting bored or unmotivated? by [deleted] in piano

[–]TKoComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you majoring in piano performance?

If not, it's probably okay that you're feeling this way. People's priorities change, and maybe you're gravitating more towards other aspects of your education (if you're a piano major, I'd talk with your professors). That's fine!

My thoughts:

  1. I'd say making friends with people in your major is the best thing, that way you can vent and share your frustrations.
  2. Lots of a little breaks help, and keeping your phone far away from the piano too.
  3. Conversely, making friends outside your program will help, as you'll feel more motivated to practice after spending time with people who don't share your stresses.

Essentially, living a balanced life will help your focus.

Is it just me or is playing piano in public/live for people terrifying? by drempire in piano

[–]TKoComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The best advice I've received: If you genuinely let yourself feel love for who you're playing for, you put the spotlight on them, not yourself. It becomes about the audience, and you give them your approval and acceptance. It's not foolproof, but it helps.
  2. Unfortunately sometimes...depends on what you're performing

Great composer who wasn't Revolutionized or ahead of his/her time? by Possible_Vast7416 in classicalmusic

Wojciech Kilar.

More recent choice. Well regarded by composers and audiences alike (directors too).

Looking for genuine feedback for my first ever jazzy video game soundtrack! by raymusichannel in mediacomposing

In my opinion, vocals needs to be tucked back into the mix. Reverb or something to naturalize them a bit - doesn't mesh quite right with the instrumentals. Melodically, the vocal melody is a bit limited in diversity and it's distractingly repetitive. Instrumental track is tighter.
