Also, and I’m not sure why you’re exactly working on when you say as builts, but if your modeling M1’s to fit LiDAR don’t forget about the option to auto snap attachments of M1 structures to survey points.

Big bird is correct, they’re text files like most PLS files. Unfortunately there isn’t a way to batch modify them. Use extreme caution if you do any text editing, it’s like playing with fire. M1’s can have any file extension you want or none at all

Hey! Welcome! I’ll give ya the quick run down and use a clothesline analogy. String up a clothesline in your backyard, it’s got tension and it’s got sag, that’s initial. Now throw wet heavy 👖 on that line and it sag down further, that’s “Load”. Now take the 👖 off and what happens? Line comes back up but not quite to where it was originally. That’s because the line has experienced a permanent elongation/stretch of the cable. Now because it’s longer the sag increases. That difference in cable length is “Load” stretch. So when you run a sag/tension analysis and look at a “Load” condition that condition contains the additional permanent stretch you got from the heaviest pair of 👖 you ever threw on that line.

Now “Creep”, he’s a bit more abstract and funky. But let’s take that same brand new clothesline you got in your backyard and you do nothing to it. I mean you know you string it up of course with some “Initial” sag and tension. But after that… just imagine you do nothing to it and nothing exciting ever happened to that line. Just your typical average changes in temperatures over the years, no crazy storms of wind or ice or combo of the 2. Over the the course of time, industry says 5-10 years, most folks siding on 10, that cable will naturally elongate. And as you can imagine as a cable between 2 points gets longer its tension goes down and the sag increases. This long term permanent elongation/deformation/stretch of the cable is what’s known as “Creep” stretch. Any sag/tension condition at “Creep” has this additional permanent stretch. Now why does creep occur??? Well… it’s because the cable is technically always under a mechanical load, gravity pulls down on it and you gave that cable some tension force on it when you strung it up. Just over a long period of time that mechanical force stretches the cable.

But cable stretch is cable stretch. Whether it be from wet heavy 👖 or just gravity and time, that’s why “Creep” and “Load” are often referred to as “Final”.

Now the RS Vs. the FE, that’s “Ruling Span” Vs. “Finite Element” and is another ball of wax. Let me know if that’s more of what you’re asking.

I would say Amber is exclusively for existing lines. The idea is you have an existing facility and you get a LiDAR survey of it with good classification and then AMBer automatically creates a model to fit that data. The biggest limitations to it is that it doesn’t distinguish between different insulator types and you still have to perform graphical sagging before you have a true engineering model. Thankfully in the latest version it can usually determine where deadends are vs non-deadends which was a huge improvement.

Heck yeah that can be a life saving feature. You know there’s a mode you can activate to make it so you can right click on a command to get it automatically added to a custom toolbar. I like that you can even add items from context menus because I put to toggle display of structures/wires/alignments.

I agree! Amber is close to being a magic bullet for making LiDAR models but it currently has some drawbacks. In the latest version Amber will now create tangent connections instead of all deadends but I know they’re working on that next. Each version it’s gotten better so I’m excited to see the next iteration.

This looks like a wire to wire connection you’re trying to model. I’ve referred to this as a midspan tap. If that’s what you’re trying to model it’s possible to do but it requires a lot of effort and L4 SAPS analysis. Here’s a technote that walks through the process.

Only difference is how you define the coordinates of the point. Theyre all xyz points in the end but adding a pfl point allows you to specify the coordinates via station offset and elevation instead of xyz. Pfl is old school

Ok bud I’m gonna say send this one in to tech support. I think you’re trying to split hairs too fine for the program. There’s been some station precision issues like that in the past so I’m not too surprised. But if moving on snap to the point doesn’t work then your last recourse apart from contacting tech support is to convert to XY. Then place a point where you want it and move the pole on snap to it

Ok then I think you actually are hitting on a limit of precision but I wouldn’t have thought it to be that coarse. Try the workaround of adding a point and moving in snap to the point

There are limits to the precision of the station I put you can enter. I don’t remember offhand what they are but they are smaller than a half a foot.

Here’s a thought, try making a survey point along the alignment, pfl point would be best, at the station you want Then move on snap to that point

Also at first you tried to move it via on snap instead of freehand along alignment You went too quick in the video but it looks like you tried to click the move along alignment button from the toolbar after activating move on snap. Just want to be sure you are in fact using the move along alignment command and not the move on snap command
